Night had fallen, and the silvery moon hung lazily in the sky. A pair of yellow-green eyes gazed up at it, and at the stars surrounding it. Slowly, the owner of the eyes lifted his paws and headed towards the nursery, intending to do a last check-up on his mate and kits before heading out.
Thrushleap sniffed Cinderstep delicately, and if she was asleep, he definitely didn't want to wake her, or the kittens. Smiling at his family, he sat down and gazed at them for a while. They looked so peaceful, and the moonlight shone on their pelts. Still, he could not help the disturbed feeling that was rising in his chest.
He felt quite lost, and even desperate. Sure, he had met many new cats, all of whom offered support and friendship. However, there was no one to stand beside him to help him make decisions as a member of authority; Fangstar had disappeared strangely, and WhisperClan hadn't had a medicine cat for moons. Basically, he was running the Clan on his own, and still, some cats doubted his deputy position. It wasn't like he was trying to take over the Clan. It was still Fangstar's... right? He had to be alive. Somewhere in the world. Or the stars. Are you up there, Fangstar?
And StarClan hadn't answered his plead for help. Only Silverstar had stepped forward, and despite the hatred and bad words she had against her, she was someone.
Perhaps he should go again. Perhaps Silverstar had just invaded his soul before StarClan even had a chance to try to connect. No, Thrushleap was not one to give up. And he believed in second chances. Standing up, he cast one glance at the kits and Cinderstep, and headed out again.
Was he being impulsive? Is going during the day better? It's bad to keep sneaking out at night, I suppose. but night is the only time to dream, and I'll make it there in a day. He quietly traversed through the snow-covered meadow, trying not to shiver. The stars seemed to gaze down upon him, but he could not get himself to look back. He kept his head forward, and stepped through StormClan territory. Finchsong better not show up again.
The sky was beginning to lighten. His eyelids drooped, but he had slept a bit during the day. Thrushleap's stomach gave an occasional rumble, but he ignored that, too. Keep going, keep going.
I can't give up on StarClan all together, he thought, as he walked. The sun was waking up, and the day had officially started. Maybe we're just too dependent on them. He finally looked upwards, and saw that the clouds had replaced the stars.
The sun had just set again. It had been an entire day since he'd saw Cinderstep. He hoped she wouldn't mind him going again. He thought of the argument they'd had, and his shoulders sagged. It had been one of the worst days of his life since his deputyship. Maybe this visit could change things. I can't keep arguing and making up with my mate!
The stars glittered overhead as he reached the Skyfield once again. The pull of the large, white crystal drew him nearer, and he fell onto the crystal once again, closing his eyes. Please, StarClan, answer me...
He opened his eyes.
