When the [Night] Calls (Roselocke)

Snowpaw's fur laid flat against her slender body now, her posture relaxed. Though her head was slighted tilted, her eyes were no longer narrowed. Though she was still slightly unhappy, she was still quite forgiving.

"Hey, it's fine Nightpaw." She meowed softly, her eyes trained upon the tom. Her tail twitching and pure white glowing in the soft dawnlight, she yawned. She was quite tired, though she would ignore it for now.

    "Hey, it's fine Nightpaw."

The tom lifted his head and gave Snowpaw a slight nod, grateful for her understanding. He was quiet for a moment, and then he shifted his weight uncomfortably, trying to figure out just how to say next what he certainly needed to say. After a short time, he glanced toward the rising sun through the trees and then looked warily back to the pristine she-cat. He took a pleading step forward, his tail curling with his question. "Snowpaw?" he began, voice even and steady, but quiet. Careful. "Listen, could you..." He furrowed his brow, his sharp eyes watching the she-cat carefully. "Could you maybe not say anything about... about this, to anyone?" He paused, and then added with a sigh, "I don't need my siblings hearing about... about what you saw." He hoped his tone conveyed that this was a big enough deal that it should be handled with sensitivity, but not so big a deal that Snowpaw needed to get curious and start asking questions. He didn't need her prying.

He wasn't sure he'd have answers for her, even if she asked.

The pure white she-cat nodded, her mismatched eyes set upon him in understanding,"Of course. Why would I tell anyone of something that you would not want me to say?" She meowed, raising her eyebrows as she sat down, grooming her slightly unruly fur, now quite calm, though there was a still slightly fearful gleam in her eyes, thouhg curiosity quickly masked it."W-what...really happened back there?" Snowpaw could not help but ask that question, her eyebrows arched in question of what could have really happened back there.

"Of course. Why would I tell anyone of something that you would not want me to say?"

Relief washed through him. Good. Good. She wouldn't say anything. There was always the possibility that she was lying to get herself out of a strange situation, but... Nightpaw didn't think she was. She seemed honest, enough. The tom almost managed to smile, but the expression never came and his face remained guarded. Which was just as well, because it readied him for her next question.

"W-what... really happened back there?"

... damn it.

Nightpaw's sharp eyes hardened, a solid wall coming up between him and Snowpaw as his thoughts scrambled to come up with something to say. Something that would be enough to satisfy her curiosity but not enough so that she knew... anything, really. The young tom pulled his whiskers back, gaze fixed on his Clanmate in the following few moments of thoughtful quiet. Well? Did he even have any sort of an answer? Anything, at all, that made any sort of of sense? And, even if he did... would Snowpaw understand? "I..." he began but stopped, furrowing his brow and, at last, looking away from the she-cat, surveying their surroundings as though the forest would have answers for him.

but it didn't.

Because nothing ever did.

Quietly, the tom sighed, still not meeting Snowpaw's gaze as his question spilled out of him. Really, he was just tired of all of these guards he felt he needed to maintain, so... "Do you know anything... about my siblings and I? How we ended up here, in TalonClan?"

"N...Not really, Nightpaw." She meowed honestly. She really barely knew anyone in the clan, and with a blink of her mismatched eyes, she thought for a moment,"W-weren't you like...Not born here?" Her question ringed through the clearing, her nervous walls back up quicker than ever. Why did she ask such a stupid question? Yet, she was so curious, she could not help but ask. Never had she met such a strange tom, but then again, she never really spoke out, since she was too sub-conscious to really ever speak. The only way to bring her walls down was to pursue them, until they broke, or to offend her, in which she will rip you apart with harsh words.

Upon hearing Snowpaw's answer, Nightpaw sighed inwardly and glanced her way. Too late now--he'd have to tell her more. He didn't like sharing so much about his family, but... maybe if she knew a little more, she would understand better and do well with keeping this whole thing a secret. The young tom fixed his sharp green eyes out into the forest as the sun continued to rise, its first rays already kissing the top of TalonClan's mountain. "We were born and abandoned in the snow, just outside of WhisperClan," he began, reluctantly. "We were found and taken care of, but, because of the storm, no one could track down the queen who left us there. It was only clear that she wasn't herself from WhisperClan." He paused, glancing briefly back at the she-cat and giving her a moment to take in the information he was giving her. Then, he continued.

"We were passed from queen to queen, never really 'belonging' to any one of them." Though, of course, Nightpaw still carried a deep affection and respect for all of the queens who had mothered him and his siblings. "We decided to try and start over for ourselves here, in TalonClan." He paused again, eyes becoming distant with the memory of the day he had convinced his littermates to go with him to the Clan up in the mountain. "What you saw or heard back there..." he went on, voice low and eyes cast away from Snowpaw. What did he say? How did he tell her he was being haunted endlessly by a cat he had never known? How was he supposed to explain the hollowness inside of him that would never be filled?

How did he make her understand he had only been trying to scream his demons away? That he wasn't crazy?

"It just... helps, sometimes," he said at last, cautiously meeting Snowpaw's eyes and waiting for her to react.

With her mismatched gaze set upon her paws, she awaited the outburst, or to be yelled at once more. She was scared of what might happen, a loud voice that would send shivers up her spine and cause herself to jump to the side, yet she heard nothing but the gentle whistle of a breeze as it touched her snowy fur and ran it's chilling fingers through the landscape of her slender body. Finally she let her gaze arise, to only meet the side of Nightpaw's face, his green eyes fixated elsewhere, just as he let his gentle voice touch the air. The she-cat's ears perked in interest as she stared at him as he spoke, every single word sinking into her thoughts. He was abandoned.

And she was asking him about things that could hold painful memories.

In those moments she felt like just slapping herself across the face as her amber and blue eyes quickly flicked to her paws, not moving up, or down, or even to the sides, as she was too embarrassed to do such actions. Still he continued speaking, and it only made a single question bubble through her, right until the second he answered it; why did he scream back there? Finally, her gaze arose and faced his, before she let her own soft voice speak,"I get it, Nightpaw." Four simple words, yet they held so much leverage and meaning.
