Lyra genuinely could not believe that so many of the Clan cats were voting... For a kit. Her voice rose in a protest, but it was already too late - a majority had spoken. The votes were in, and they were all going to watch a kit die. Every last one of them - now murderers, simply because they had thought more about first appearances and judged so quickly. Every cat that had been voted for had been innocent, some of them vital to their survival. At this rate, the murderers were going to be the only ones left. With a little wail, Lyra finally felt herself beginning to break.
"Not one of you look away!" she spat, eyes flashing fury. "You cry for justice, then accuse a kit?! You watch the death of this young one, this one that you voted of! You watch her die, because you killed her! Every one of you that called her name, and every one that didn't struggle more. All of us. We're all killers." Her laughter was harsh and vibrant with the cracking sound of pain as she headed toward a den. Pausing at the entrance, the ghostly cat tossed a glance over her shoulder. "If you're looking for the murderers here tonight, just look around. You'll see the truth in every pair of eyes, and you'll see the truth in the reflection of your face. I hope you can live with yourselves." Lyra could not recall a time that she'd been so absolutely furious - and as she dropped into her nest, she felt dread fall like a stone into her belly. She hadn't been able to control her fury at the injustice - but would it cost her her life tomorrow?
