[Heather] Beneath the [Ash] Tree (Jupiter)

Ashkit looked back over his shoulder to find Heatherkit frozen in place. "Heatherkit!" he sighed trudging back to where the gray and white kitten stood. "We're in the forest," as if she hadn't realized. "Come on, don't get lost. We can't be out long or they'll come looking for us." he nudged her shoulder with his nose. He wanted to introduce her to the Mossy Pool. It should be frozen over by now. He had heard the apprentices talking about it earlier.

The last time he had been out of camp was with a bunch of eager kits that hadn't been able to go very far into the birch forest. The furthest they got was the Mossy Oak. It had been fun while it lasted.

Heatherkit fluffed up her medium length fur as the wind blew. She heard Ashkit coming towards her and give her a nudge in the right direction. So many noises...so loud. She meowed as the grey and white kit followed close beside him. Sorry, I'm just not used to all of this. It's much colder out here than in camp.

[Anya]

"It's alright," Ashkit pushed forward, swatting aside fallen twigs and potential hazards. "It's Leafbare and the space is so big and the trees are bare. It hasn't snowed a lot though." in fact the snow had barely stuck. It was still early though. Maybe they'd get to play in it soon.

He felt a tug at his chest and he wanted to cough but he suppressed it. "We're almost there, that's the Mossy Oak!" he exclaimed in excitement.

Leaf-bare. So that's what this cold weather is. The ground was cold and crunchy. There aren't as many scents in the air of prey. Where are all the animals? Heatherkit asked curiously. A few birds are the only things that can be heard in the air. Mossy Oak? What ever it was, Ashkit was sure excited about so the grey and white kit was too.

Ashkit nodded and then remembered she couldn't see. Mousebrain. "Yeah I think I remember Dovestream saying something about Leafbare being the hardest to hunt in because there's less prey. I don't really know where they all went. She said many birds fly away to escape the colder weather."

They had reached the Mossy Oak. It was a massive tree, the moss was turning slightly brown. but his objective was the Mossy Pool! "Just a little further I think." He wasn't exactly sure how much further the Mossy Pool was but...can't be too far right?

"Isn't it exciting!" he exclaimed. The forest was full of new things to learn and explore.

Heatherkit listened to him as she carefully followed him to their destination at the Mossy Pool. So the animals are hiding to keep warm! That makes sense. You sure do know a lot of stuff, Askit. Although it was Dovetail giving the tom the information, the grey and white kit still thought he was very knowledgeable. She learned a lot of new things today because of him.

When he said that they were almost there, Heatherkit could barley wait! She couldn't believe she was outside of camp, exploring the territory. Oh if mother found out about this, she would be in big trouble. It is! She squealed.

A few mouse tails ahead a reflective surface came into view. "The Mossy Pool! It's turned to ice!" Ashkit stopped at the edge of the small dip. He was use to seeing icicles on trees in camp, but never so much ice on the ground! He took a hesitant step forward and flinched at the cold touch. "It's really cold. Be careful Heatherkit." His paw pad tingled at the burning sensation. He gave it a lick before placing it down again. He withdrew it once more but less quickly. A few more attempts and soon the ice didn't bother him. He rushed forward only to fall with all four legs outstretched and his little belly flopped on the cold floor. "Oof. It's slippery too." he frowned. It was too slippery!

The gray tom spread out his toes and attempted to stand up on the slick surface. He managed to rise for a second before falling again. He tried over and over until he finally found his footing.

Heatherkit felt the world outaide the camp was harsher. It was much much colder out here than inside the walls of the camp. No. She couldn't make excuses. Warriors have to go out in all conditions to bring back food and protect the clan. If she wanted to be like them, then she had to face the cold like it was nothing. The small kit heard Ashkit exclaim that they were here. Finally! She waited by the edge as she listened to him try out the frozen water. Everytime he fell, she cringed, not liking the sound of his body hit the ice. Hesitating, Heatherkit slowly stepped out onto the ice. Woah! She stepped back, not liking that the ice was even colder. Taking a deep breath, she put her paw back on the ice and applied pressure. As she began to step onto the ice with her other paw, the kit slipped and fell. A groan escaped her lungs as she hit the hard ground. The cold stung all over her body, chilling her to the bone. The kit tried standing again several times but fell down everytime. I cant do it. Heatherkit sighed in frustration and scrambled back onto land.

[Anya]

"I can't do it!" Heatherkit let out a frustrated sigh. Ashpaw looked to see her scrambling back onto the snowy bank.

"Don't give up! Warriors aren't supposed to stop trying." he reasoned. During her attempts he had learned how to move forward, with a struggle that is. His body was cold and his behind was numb from collapsing every try.

The tom pushed forward, wobbling as he moved towards Heatherkit. "I'll lend you my shoulder," he mewed. "Come on, give it another try!" he urged.

Heatherkit sighed, knowing that Ashkit was right. Even though every inch of her body was freezing, the kit stood up and stepped back out onto the ice. She didn't use his shoulder, wanting to accomplish this on her own. She fell down a few more times before being able to stay standing. She breathed a sigh of relief as a smiled was repainted on her face. It was, but worth it. Heatherkit just needed to believe in herself. I did it!
