OOC: Hootpaw's kinda like that one kid in pre-Okay who sits in the corner by himself, playing with the checker pieces or something CX that's what's happening right now.

The brown tabby tom flicked his tail as he continued to try to build his small structure. He had pawed together a small pile of mud, and tried to construct a wall, mimicking the outside of the TalonClan cave. So far, nothing was working, and he was trying to prop sticks to support his mini-cave. 

Hootpaw ignored the weird looks his fellow apprentices gave him, and glared back, continuing to shape the mud pile together with his paws. This is kit's stuff I'm doing. Whatever. No one wants to talk to me anyway, and I've done all my chores already. Who cares what others think? Not me. Calmly, he picked up a couple of leaves he'd collected with his mouth, and placed them on the mud lump for decoration. Then, he reached out a paw to pat the mud together to make it firmer- 

"Oh, Silverstar!" he spat. He had accidentally knocked down his own creation (as he had no elbow) in trying to reach it. "Argh!" 

[Wolf]

"Want some help?" A voice asked from behind the apprentice. The voice belonged to the older warrior Nightwind, and the wiry tom padded out from behind Hootpaw and sat down next to him. "Do you mind if I sit here with you? You look like you could use some company." His copper eyes gleamed with patience and care, a long way from the impatient and flighty apprentice he once was. Taking a pawful of mud, he began to help Hootpaw reconstruct the structure he had been making, skillfully placing and smoothing down each pawful as if he had done it before.

Hootpaw frowned as he watched Nightwind rebuild the small pile. Was he actually helping him? His narrowed eyes stared straight downward, but finally looked up at the older tom, whose eyes gleamed with wisdom. "You're Nightwind?" he guessed. After a pause, Hootpaw looked down again, and began to gather mud, aiding Nightwind. "Thanks for sitting with me. I needed some company," he admitted after another short while. "Is it... is it hard to be a warrior?"

[Wolf]

Nightwind nodded at Hootpaw's question, glancing quickly at him before looking back at the pile. "That's my name. You're Hootpaw, yes?" He continued to slap mud and carefully smooth it as he spoke. "It seems hard at first, but then you remember that it's what you'd dreamed of since you were a tiny kit and it takes the weight off, you know?" The skinny black tom shrugged as he built the structure with Hootpaw. "I found it harder to be an apprentice. Young cats judge each other more, and can be much more vicious than the most skilled warrior." Nightwind spoke, his eyes glinting with some sort of unspoken memory.

Hootpaw nodded, scooping up more mud. "Oh yes, we're all at the age where we judge others by their skill level," Hootpaw said bitterly. "I can't hunt or fight as good as some of my denmates, and so they don't ask me to go with them on their practice sessions. How am I supposed to get better if I don't practice with others? So I'm just here, building mini-caves. Result, eh? I do wonder what my warrior name would be. Though it wouldn't be too bad to be a medicine cat," he added hastily, feeling comfortable sharing his goals with this cat. "You get to help more, you know?"

[Wolf]

Nightwind nodded thoughtfully. "Yeah, I suppose that makes sense too." The black tom nodded in a sign of support for the young cat's goals. "Though if you want to practice with someone, you could always ask me. Even warriors need to practice sometimes." The warrior replied, gently flicking Hootpaw's shoulder with the tip of his skinny black tail as he focused his dark orange gaze on the smaller tom next to him.

Hootpaw hauled himself off, accidentally knocking part of the mud structure off. "Really?" he asked, excitement sparking in his eyes. "You would do that with me?" Wow! A warrior taking time to practice with me! "Sure!" he exclaimed, lashing his tail (and hitting a passing she-cat, but what did he care?) "Now?"

((I feel like this is perfect time to use Yellowflower :3)) 

The dark colored tabby moved from one end of the camp to other. Her goal? She wanted to see the newborn kits! Yellowflower always wanted to have a litter of her own...it just hadn't happened yet. So, she visited the Queens whenever she got a chance. Lost in a day dream the yellow-eyed she-cat didn't notice the other two cats that sat around some mud and felt a small tail brush along side of her.
"Oh! I'm sorry!" Her voice was soft, kind. If it was compared to anything one might think of a warm breeze or flower petals. Looking down at the piles she realized they kind of resembled something. "What are you building, Hootpaw?" She had genuine curiosity and looked up at Hootpaw with a small on her muzzle. Crouching down to get a better look her whiskers twitched in thought. It was nice to see the apprentice have someone around him. He was kind of lost in his own world sometimes. Flicking her puffy tail at Nightwind in a "hello" the motherly warrior waited patiently to hear from the smaller cat.
