The Reckless and the Brave [tagged]

There is a thin line between bravery and stupidity, and many would agree that it was about the same width as the pungent line of scent delineating SunsetClan territory and LeafClan land. In fact, the line was thin enough to step easily from one to the other, though impetuous Blossompaw paused for several moments, wondering if she dared, wondering about the consequences. It wasn't that she was stupid, really - just puffed up on her own pride and sense of self-importance, combined with a hefty dose of utter boredom and a hunger for thrill-seeking. Such a cocktail of emotions was rarely a safe thing. Today was likely to prove no different.

The slender ginger-and-white tabby sat literally just inside the border, the very tips of her paws pressing against a relatively long, flat stone that had been sprayed by some tom earlier in the day. Her amber eyes were a careful glitter of calculation and excitement; a rising cloud of adrenaline was very likely to cast a haze over her usually-dubious judgement and threatened to make her do something stupid. Not that Blossompaw was stupid - she was just reckless. Very, very reckless.

Standing up, the apprentice curled her lip with distaste at the thick scent marker, reaching out her own forepaw and rubbing angrily against it in an attempt to obliterate the previous SunsetClan scent. The forest around her was rife with birdsong and the rustling of prey; farther away, like a low undertone, she could just barely hear the roar of the Big Water. Glancing over both shoulders, the tabby youth could see no one behind her; a further examination on her sides and in front of her suggested that she was really quite alone. The warmth in her belly shot, fire-like, right through her veins, finding its agitated way to her heart. With a devilishly wicked smile, the apprentice lifted her paw - and placed it onto the SunsetClan side of the border. The other forepaw followed quickly, and before she knew it, she was once more trespassing - and far too excited at the feeling it gave her.

"Feeling adventurous, hmmm?" A she-cat's voice rose through the normal sounds of the forest as the apprentice crossed the border. The brown tabby warrior stepped out of her undergrowth cover, the white on her pelt seemingly illuminating her bright green eyes. "Didn't your mentor ever teach you not to cross onto other Clan's territory?" She didn't seem angry...no, she seemed curious, rather, about this young cat. "Trespassing may seem exciting now, kit, but it won't be when you learn how important boundaries are." Her voice was smooth like honey, soothing even. but her eyes showed that she wasn't particularly amused with the apprentice's testing of borders.

Her fur lay flat on her shoulders as she sat down, studying the smaller cat. "One would think that LeafClan would teach their apprentices to stay within their own borders. but since this kit seems to enjoy jumping scent lines, I guess not. What do you think, Pebblespot?" The tabby she-cat looked over her shoulder at the break in the undergrowth where she had emerged from.

The chipper, silver tom came from behind his clanmate. They were watching a curious kit make their way over to their side of the border. He was never a border hopper when he was young, never truly curious enough about it. However, he can see how it would be a rush. He trotted over silently and crouched down beside her, "one might think this particular kit is just a little too curious... better training should be in this apprentices future for sure" while his voice was rather happy, he meant it in the most serious way possible. Sometimes this tom was too happy for his own good.

His stomach felt queasy with the moments soon to come. Confrontation was never a strong point for him. "Might we... go have a look?" he declared, trying to roughen up his appearance; which everyone knows he was not a rough cat. While trying to act tough, he hadn't notice his clanmate had already got up and left him. He laid his ears back in embarrasment and hurried to get beside her.

Yikes! Caught. No sooner had Blossompaw gotten all four dainty feet over the scent marker than she was utterly and totally blown. The sharp, predominantly-ginger face shot up, amber eyes sparking something like outrage and embarrassment in equal measures. She flicked her gaze over the surrounding scenery, suddenly alighting upon the brown tabby a short distance ahead of her. Had she been in a better situation, the youth would have been appropriately impressed; for a non-LeafClan cat, she'd been very sneaky. However, anger and discomfort flared up equally in the apprentice's belly, giving her the worm-belly feeling of indigestion combined neatly with an awkward prickle along her skin as though she had ants in her fur.

Moments later, though, all of the squirming feelings were promptly dissolved in a flood of righteous fury at the warrior's casual insulting of LeafClan and their ways. The strip of fur along her back slowly started lifting itself, her chest puffing slightly and her claws sliding from their sheaths. Ha! This good-for-nothing sand-loving furball thought she could debase her own righteous, glorious Clan? It was all the impulsive kitten could do not to step forward. Unfortunately, while her physical self-control was clearly strong enough, her tongue had a mind of its own, and she found herself snapping before thinking - which, to be fair, wasn't exactly unusual for her.

"As if LeafClan has to respect SunsetClan borders," she huffed, little flames sparking in her eyes. "You water-cats always stay on your stupid beach anyways; you never come this way." Well, that clearly was a bit inaccurate, since there was currently a cat standing here right now, but still. An exception to the rule, surely! Except that another exception promptly made itself visible. Sliding out of the brush behind the brown tabby, a spotted-looking fellow appeared, some unexplainable expression on his face. Blossompaw nearly took a step back, but forced herself to remain still. She tried to bolster herself with her age-old LeafClan confidence, tilting her chin like an empress and allowing the most withering of glares to cross her face. She wouldn't be cowed!

The brown tabby tipped her head in mock sympathy and flicked her tail, stifling a purr of amusement as her Clanmate finally caught up. "Well clearly we do, considering we caught you here on our side of the border. And your mentor would probably cuff you if they heard you say that Clans shouldn't respect borders." The queen pointed out. Briarspring wrapped her fluffy tail neatly around her paws. "It wouldn't be wise of you to challenge two full grown warriors, would it little one?" She mewed cooly. "What's a kit like you doing all the way out here unaccompanied anyway?" She asked. Her ears twitched as she watched the smaller she-cat display what was a clear sign of youthful arrogance and over-confidence - something she had seen in her daughter a few times.

Pebbblespot stood behind his clanmate as she spoke to the young she-cat. He listened she spoke to the border crosser and nodded in agreement. He studied the leaf clan cat and smiled softly, while he never hopped over border lines, he remembered being prideful and tried his best to look stronger than his opponent. When he grew up, he realized how silly he must have looked. Especially while looking at this kit now. He wondered how to handle this situation, hopefully it would be smooth sailing with Briarspring speaking to her. He’d hate to have it blow up into something else.

Blossompaw shrugged, looking like the entire conversation was starting to bore her. In all honesty, it probably was; she quickly grew tired of situations where she was scolded or others tried to make her feel that she'd done wrong, and she wished that the two SunsetClan cats would just go away. She was bored with their so-called lessons and their patient gazes and expectant silences; she just wanted to explore a little deeper into this side of the border, maybe catch a squirrel and take it home to her Clan for dinner, and then regale her denmates with her story of bravery and daring. Of course, they'd all adore her; she was strong and talented and clever and, best of all, pure-blooded. She was the perfect apprentice, and this less-than-perfect encounter was thoroughly boring her.

"I never said that other Clans shouldn't respect borders," she pointed out primly, tail tip flicking in the air. "See, I whole-heartedly believe that other Clans should respect their borders. It's just, you see," Here, Blossompaw looked awkward, as if having to tell these SunsetClanners such a dreadful truth wasn't exactly something she wanted to do. "You see, LeafClan's just so much more... well, just better than all of the other Clans. That's why everyone tried to wipe us out in those battles so long ago." She shrugged again. "They knew we were the most powerful, and so everyone tried to get rid of us. but couldn't," she added pointedly, shooting an autocratic amber glare towards both the tabby and the spotted tom. At Briarspring's question of what she was doing out here unaccompanied, she just shot her another look. She wasn't a kit, and she wouldn't be treated like one, she told herself. No point even in replying.

Briarspring rolled her green eyes and gazed at the apprentice with sympathy. "You can believe that your Clan is the greatest but everycat, from the smallest kit to the oldest elder knows that without this system, we'd all be nothing but rogues, no morals and no sense of direction." The queen's tabby tail lashed impatiently as she stared at Blossompaw with an even gaze. "All the Clans depend on one another whether they admit it or not and borders are in place for a reason. You may be an apprentice but you have no more sense than a newborn kit." Briarspring's ears flicked and she glanced over at her Clanmate. "It was foolish of the Clans to try to rid the territories of LeafClan but since your Clan survived, we've all realized that the 6 Clans need each other."

Pebblespot shifted on his paws with uncertainty. The apprentice was a bit arrogant and rude; a couple of traits he could never understand. Why would anyone want to be treated that way and why would someone treat someone that way? He couldn't wrap his soft mind around it. He tried to listen to her as she spoke about leafclan being the best clan. While he belonged to one clan, all clans were vital and important. The other clans made a mistake and they realized that mistake when they realized how vital they all were together. As much faith as he had in the clans, he understood why the leafclan decided to brainwash their young.

He stepped in with the brief pause. "All clans have their own beliefs on how is best. Yes leafclan was attacked to be wiped out and yes you guys fought through it. All the clans made a mistake and we all realized that mistake. We won't tempt is again because each clan is strong in it's own way," he paused for a second or two, "but that does not mean you have the best clan" he pointed out firm and directly. "Each clan has their strengths. Some clans raise their young to be amazing tree climbers, and others are raised to be excellent swimmers. We're not all perfect and neither are you" his firm was hard over the apprentice. "All warriors know to respect their borders and as a warrior in training, you should do the same" he knew this apprentice wasn't going to change their way, but maybe providing some insight on imperfections and grounds rules mind be something she could take out of the experience. He wasn't going to fight her by any means; at least he hoped it wouldn't come down to that.

Blossompaw's eyes consistently narrowed, until she was staring out of irritated amber slits. The urge to fight these warriors and prove how much better her Clan was was entirely too strong, but her common sense had not yet ducked out of the picture entirely. Flicking her tail fiercely, she let the two older cats drone on, wondering if they would ever stop (really, full-grown cats never seemed to see the need to just stop speaking, in her opinion). This was slowly turning into a bore-fest; she couldn't logically attack these two because she was outnumbered, and she couldn't easily leave without losing face. So what could she do? Only one thing left, then.

"You're right." She replied quickly, dipping her head. The words almost stuck in her throat, but she was quickly tiring of the whole situation, and the longer she stood here, the more likely she was to get caught. "LeafClan just wants us to be the best we can be, but I should have realized that there are other skills that we don't have. And as a warrior, I'll be sure that the borders are respected." She spoke carefully, putting as much honesty as she could in her voice and being careful in her use of words. "May I go back now?" She'd find something else to do; this wasn't as interesting as last time.
