Her gentle paws carried her across the territory. She was out an about with her mentor being busy and she needed something to keep her occupied. She had recently had a small hunting session with nightpaw. She still felt a little awkward with her communicating with others. Friendship was not her first key and it did not come close to being natural for her. It was a miracle that she even went out with him. Now, she was out and alone. Enjoying her time exploring her home.

She had already gotten to know the east side of the territory. Today was all about getting to know the west side. She kept her dark grey, bushy tail up off the ground. Nothing more irritating than having leaves, dirt and twigs stuck in her tail. She felt like she was basically training herself. Briarclaw was always so busy, she never had a lot of time for any training. She made her own hunting techniques and had no issues with getting her catch. However, fighting was not her best trait. This is why she preferred to be alone; well, she had always preferred to be alone, not just now.

The grey she-cat made note of the trees and bushes around her. She would explore this land a few more times until she knew it like the back of her paw. Any distractions now would only set her back a day or so.

Morning on the rocky mountains which Talonclan called home was stunning. The sun felt so close you could reach out and touch it when it rose from what seemed like within the mountain and up into the sky. Its golden rays shooting out across the darkness of dawn and breaking into an array of stunning purples, oranges, pinks and yellows. Warming the cold stone which covered the vast majority of the territory, with very little forestry to be seen. Besides the occasional small tree peaking from between two boulders or a tuft of wirey brush. but to the handsome red and white long haired tabby tom who now struck out across the rocky terrain none of this beauty was actually seen. His golden amber eyes too focused on his paw work, as he leapt from one rocky ledge to another. Determined to become a even better climber than he already was Redpaw had taken to making a habit of getting up real early and just climbing. Not only did it build up his stamina but it also helped ease his mind. Helped him forget about his sister or his parents. It made him the closest to happy he'd ever been. Cause when he climbed it was just him and the mountain, nothing more. His body working seamlessly to propel him upwards, downwards and sideways. It was too difficult to dwell on bad things when climbing such precarious cliffs. Something the sturdy tom was grateful for, his only escape.

She made her way over rocks and through bushes. The long haired feline could feel her fur getting tugged on. She took a moment and sat down to survey her surroundings. Most of what was here looked like what was on the east side of the territory. She looked around and took in the same sights. She would be studying this piece of land for about a week and then she’d move on to the north side. She felt neutral about exploring. She felt neutral about a lot of things.

She kept walking and noticed a rather large rock. She saw the sun hit it just right and she thought it would be a perfect spot for basking in the sun. She hurried her way over to the rock and she crawled on top of it. She wasn’t the best climber, but she knew her way around a ledge or two. She sprawled out on top of the rock and rolled over on her side. “Perfect…” she sighed in content.

Redpaw's climb for the day was winding down, as he was starting to reach the end of the cliff he currently climbed. His breath coming swiftly but evenly as he continued up towards the top. The handsome rich red tabby markings on his pelt gleaming in the morning's sunshine as he went. It was slightly rumpled from the climb but otherwise well kept. Might as well take care of it, since he often had nothing better to do. When the large tom makes his final leap, he lands solidly on a large flat expanse of ledge that connected to a main part of the territory. Taking a breath he pauses, feeling his heart beat pound in his ears. Golden amber eyes glancing around, he spots something out of sorts. On top of a boulder nearby was something furry. Squinting in the sunlight he realizes the 'something furry' was a cat. Sniffing he pads closer to investigate since the lump of grey fur he saw wasn't very easy to see and not moving. " Uh hello?" he calls out his words coming in a little out of breath.

Her mind was adrift with other thoughts. Like how she would fare as a warrior without friends. How she will even become a warrior without the training of her mentor. Training was rare to come by these days with Briarclaw. She opened her eyes and look at the world from a sideways view. She could see much of the territory from where she was laying down. Nothing exciting, just trees, bushes and rocks. She closed her eyes again and began to plan out her next week. If briarclaw decides not to train her this week, she wouldn’t have to worry about any delays.

As her mind was racing with planning out her every move, her concentration was cut short. Someone had called out to her. The voice was that of a male. She had recognized the voice briefly from the apprentices den. She sat up and shook her head. Turning around she noticed the red tabby tom. “Redpaw?” she analyzed. With his initial response it sounded like he didn’t know who she was. Which was completely fair, seeing as the first apprentice she had ever spoken to was nightpaw. The grey she-cat stretched out her small limbs and say back down, curling her tail delicately over her paws. “What are you doing here?” she questioned.

When the cat on top of the boulder sat up, Redpaw vaguely recognized her. She was a fellow apprentice though her name to be honest escaped him at the moment. He was notorious for being bad with names, he just didn't have any reason to remember them. Cats didn't often speak with him, making him feel invisible like his parents had made him feel his entire kithood. When the she-cat spots him he blinks a little surprised she knew his name at all. " Um yeah its me." He mumbles blinking his golden amber eyes up at her. Tired of craning his neck in order to see a top the boulder, he gathers his haunches beneath him and leaps. Landing beside the she-cat with ease, he catches her next words. " Oh well I climb every morning." He says in response. Carefully sitting down, with enough space between them that they didn't touch or anything. " What are you doing?" He inquires glancing around the sunny boulder. His handsome pelt gleaming richly in the sun's warm glow.

She watched him make a graceful leap up to the ledge. She nodded in greeting. While the rock they were sitting on was very warm, her bland expression said otherwise. He was a climber, that’s nice. She enjoyed climbing from time to time. More so than swimming. It takes forever for this thick coat to dry. She thought about how she should go about her answer. She didn’t want anyone to take pity on her training herself, not like she would accept any offer anyway. “I’m just basking in the sun” she finally answered. “I’m between training days. When in between I take some personal time to explore parts of the territory… I decided to do this side after finishing up the east side last week” she went on to further explain.

The smoky feline studied her fellow apprentice. He seemed to be unsure of her. Maybe he wasn’t familiar at all. Again, not like she would be surprised. “I’m sure you already know who I am, but seeing as we’ve never talked or share tongue or anything like that… I’m smokepaw” she introduced. Her tone was relatively neutral. No wonder friendship was difficult to come by. Wait, it wasn’t her voice, it was her monotone speaking voice and cold attitude.

Redpaw listens quietly to the she-cat as she revealed her days plans. Sort of intrigued when she mentions exploring the different parts of the territory for a whole day. What could you possibly explore in one part of the territory all day? It was all rock! Well mostly rock anyways. but then again it would give her an advantage, since she probably wouldn't get lost if she knew all of the territory so well. Shoving the thought aside, he suddenly realizes she had switched topics and cocks his head sideways at her. Oh she must of notice I never said her name, he thought feeling a small stab of guilt. " Oh um well nice to formally meet you, Smokepaw." he says with a respectful incline of his broad skull. " I'm Redpaw as you already seemed to of known." He adds his luxurious plume of a tail flickering a little, as he spoke. His golden amber eyes flickering like fire in the sunshine's powerful glow. He cannot help but shift his weight from paw to paw as a silence fell between them. Normal cats would come up with something to talk about, but Redpaw had always struggled with holding onto conversations. And he got very little practice since he was often ignored. " So um... " He mumbles wondering if he should just part ways now. She was probable;y already sick of him anyways, he thought.

The air between them was heavy with awkwardness. Neither of them were coming up with anything to say. Generally cats in the same clan; let alone the same den, would find something to talk about. The two sat up on the rock and she looked around for a conversation piece. She knew she had to start somewhere with speaking to others. It was something her mentor had advised her to do. She didn’t understand why it was important, it was just stressed that it was. As he briefly spoke again to share his equal view of awkwardness she swallowed a lump of air.

“I’m not good at this, but my mentor says I have to get over it” she bluntly came out with it. It’s not like she didn’t like the tom, she just didn’t know how to talk to others. It was weird enough with her being trained and having constant communication with them. “How far are you with your training?” she simply started out.

Just when Redpaw felt he could not stand the silence any longer, Smokepaw broke it. Relieved his ears perk up to catch the she-cat's words. They sort of surprise him in a way and he blinks his golden amber gaze a few times, his head tilting to one side. but he merely nods, and listens as she asks him a question. His mind casting around for answer he shrugs his broad shoulders. " Ummm not terribly far." He admits though for some reason it didn't bug him very much. " How about you?" He inquires hoping to keep their conversation a float and feeling a little better that Smokepaw wasn't any better with conversations than him. As he awaited a response from his fellow den mate, Redpaw finds himself slowly slipping into a more comfortable position. The warm sun feeling rather good on his pelt, as his golden amber eyes watched Smokepaw. His muscles still burning from his workout, slowly start to relax against the warm stone beneath his body.

His training experience sounded like hers. She felt his pain. “Same here.. I like Briarclaw and everything but she’s been too busy to keep up with training. It feels as though I’ll never get my warrior name” her voice sounded more disappointed as she spoke. She truly felt like it would be moons before she’d ever move up. She just wanted it to be over with, but she couldn’t. “It’s been frustrating” she admitted. This was the first time she had confided in her troubles with another member of the clan.

While she was still put off by the idea of socializing, she felt talking to him would help her get better. She was such a bitter cat for her age. So young, yet so disconnected. “I’ve only been out training once and I’m twelve moons for starclans sake!” uh oh, her emotions were showing. More or less, her anger was increasing the more she spoke about it. It was a touchy subject.

Redpaw knew at some point he had learned that the Talonclan deputy Briarclaw was Smokepaw's mentor. but he'd sort of forgotten so now as the she-cat mentioned her he found himself even more curious. What was it like having the deputy as a mentor? He could only imagine the expectations were exceedingly high. Tuning into her words, he listens with a nod of his skull and cannot help but feel good that he had Morningsky as mentor. She was kind and very responsible about putting in the time to train him. Even if things were going slow at least he knew more than poor Smokepaw did.

" That's rough." He admits giving her a sympathetic look. Noticing the anger that arose from her voice as she delved deeper into her problem. Feeling awkward Redpaw hesitates then says, " Well I don't know much... but if you ever wanted some pointers on climbing or whatever.... I might be able to help." He offers unsure the she-cat would want his help since he was younger than her. Though that was hard to tell due to his size and magnificent pelt which made him appear older than he was. He even had the broad structure to his handsome face that made him look like an adult tom cat.

She was fuming on the inside and she just wanted to run off. She watched the tom react to her sudden outburst of emotion. She had to admit, it was fairly awkward for her to do that. A smile was hidden under her straight expression as he offered her some help. At first, she was going to decline his helpful offer; however, she wanted to get to know the tom more. She figured it wouldn't hurt to actually have a friend. Whatever that was. She slowly nodded. It felt foreign accepting help and spending time with others. "I wouldn't mind some climbing... pointers" she finally answered.

Redpaw had pretty much convinced himself that Smokepaw would refuse his offer. So when the smokey feline accepted he blinks in surprise. " Oh w-well great." He says awkwardly trying to find words. " I practice early every morning... so um maybe you could tag along sometime and well yeah I can try an um help." he says feeling like a babbling idiot. He flushes and looks to his paws, his fluffy tail tip twitching in agitation with himself. Why can't I just be normal!? He thought taking a deep breath and keeping his face void of emotion. Looking back at Smokepaw he wonders what she thought of him. Most cats paid no attention or ignored him. So when a cat actually spoke with him he couldn't help but wonder why. Moons of being ignored or looked over had made him almost unable to believe that others could simply just want to talk with him. It was damaging to the tom, and something he had to overcome if he was to succeed as a warrior.
