His face was filled with a focused and determined look, his blue eyes looking around the clearing for a certain tom-cat. Snowpaw was standing at the foot of Sunsetclan's entrance, a skinny squirrel and fat mouse in his strong jaws. He was looking for his mute friend, a grey tabby apprentice named Ashpaw. They had happened to run into each other the other day and, despite Ashpaw being mute, became friends. Snowpaw had tried to approach the other tom cat a few days after, though he was doing something and Snowpaw didn't want to disturb him. Praying that Ashpaw didn't think he was ignoring him, Snowpaw bounded over to the apprentices den and poked his head in. He carefully scanned the small den with hopeful blue orbs. No Ashpaw was seen. He gave a sigh of defeat.

Dejected, he made his way to his normal spot and sat down. Wishing that Ashpaw was there to enjoy the prey, he set the small animals down next to him and rolled onto his back. He shut his brilliant blue eyes and purred, the sunlight feeling nice on his belly. He sat there for about a hour, though it only felt like a minute to him. He pushed himself to his paws, yawned, and scanned the clearing once again. "Ashpaw, where are you?" he muttered.  

I knew adventure was on it's way.

    A dark grey tabby padded into the camp, accompanied by a little calico. He walked rather slowly, as if in a deep conversation and trying to walk all at the same time. Upon passing the mouth of the entrance, he cast his dark-green eyes about. The glittering pools fell upon a familiar form. He nodded to the cat beside him, who rolled her eyes and made her way off to the Apprentice's den. Taking up a smile, the tabby approached his friend.

    He flicked his tail in greeting. He noticed that the other tom seemed to be looking for someone. With a faint tilt of his head, he silently questioned. He was glad to see Snowpaw again. After the sudden friendship, he had missed it having, again, only his sister. He continued to approach.

    He had spent the morning on a walk, as usual, with his sister. And now that he had returned, he hoped that he would be able to do something with his new friend. The tom seemed to be full of all these good ideas that made Ashpaw feel rather boring. He was glad his thoughts were not apparent to anyone but himself at the moment. For now, it was masked with a friendly smile.

Giving a soft sigh, Snowpaw scanned the clearing one last time before giving up and assuming he was outside of camp. A small frown found its way on the white toms face. Ever since he had meet the mute tabby, he had wanted to spend more time with him. Ashpaw seemed...different from other apprentices, and it wasn't just because he was mute. The grey tom seemed very clever and a little grumpy. Snowpaw flicked his tail-tip in annoyance just as a familiar scent hit his nose. Snowpaw quickly turned to look to his side. His face showed a mix of shock and happiness. "What? Ashpaw? Dude, I was just looking for you!" He laughed, a large smile quickly replacing the small frown.

Snowpaw glanced back to the prey sitting next to his paws. "Oh! I caught you this really fat mouse! You like mice, right? Or you can have the squirrel, I don't really care." The older apprentice meowed softly, flicking his tail towards the mouse and squirrel. Honestly, Snowpaw hated squirrels, but he was almost 99.9% sure that Ashpaw liked mice.

    A sheepish smile made its way onto the face of the tom. Looking for me? I hope I didn't cause him any trouble... He approached, smiling normally again. At the mention of food, his stomach reminded him that he was hungry. Well, it's great that I have Snowpaw to count on, then, he thought, wryly, because I surely couldn't have caught anything on my own. Another voice quietly told him to shut up and be grateful.

You like mice, right?

    He nodded emphatically. He was more than a little surprised that the cat knew that. but, he smiled anyway, and dipped his head in appreciation. Thank you, he thought. He felt bad that he could not say so aloud. but, he figured the other tom would understand. He didn't strike Ashpaw as an idiot.

Snowpaw smiled at the grey tabby tom. Even if he didn't say it, Snowpaw knew he was trying to tell him 'thank you'. A small laugh erupted form the white apprentice's throat. "Your welcome, Ashpaw." He meowed, looking away for a moment. A awkward silence filled the air. Clearing his throat, Snowpaw looked back at Ashpaw, his blue eyes dancing. "U-Um, sorry if you don't like it...I'm sure you could catch your own but I just..." A sheepish grin crept up onto the older toms face as he quickly looked away, suddenly finding the ground very interesting. 'Wow, way to go. Didn't seem like a idiot at all!' He thought, rolling his eyes at his sudden awkwardness.

    Ashpaw settled down and tucked his paws under his chest, glancing up at Snowpaw. He then took a bite of the prey that had been provided for him. He flicked his tail at the silence, a slight frown stealing onto his face. He wished he could break silences. but, that would literally be impossible unless he wanted to start dancing around and hitting things with his head. The mental image made him smile slightly, and he snorted inwardly.
    Perfect timing for such thoughts, Ashpaw.

    If I don't like it? The tabby tom shook his head, raising an eyebrow at his friend. No, he certainly liked it. He then took another bite of the mouse, just to prove the point. He gave Snowpaw an amused smile. The awkwardness coming from the older Apprentice seemed slightly out of place. Ashpaw couldn't help but find it funny.

Snowpaw gave a soft sigh. What was up with him being randomly awkward? He was never awkward around anyone else, and it wasn't because of Ashpaw lacking the skill of talking. It was something else. Something that was very different from what he had even really feel before. The older tom-cat looked back down at Ashpaw. He gave a small smile as he took another bite of the mouse.

'I wonder if Ashpaw ever gets the feeling... He pondered, his confused blue orbs cutting back down to the ground. "Hey um...Ashpaw? Do you ever uh...you know... Snowpaw began awkwardly, avoiding the tom-cats gaze. Letting out a loud, frustrated sigh, he plopped down next to the grey tabby and buried his nose in his paws. "J-just nevermind." he said, embarrassed.

    The tabby continued contentedly eating the mouse. At Snowpaw's attempt at a question, he looked up, swiping his tongue across his muzzle. He tilted his head. What is it? he wondered. He couldn't figure out what his friend had been trying to say. Nevermind? The embarrassment made him frown. What had gotten into him? With a faint shrug of his shoulders, he went back to his meal. After he had finished, he licked his muzzle again, scratched at his ear, and pushed himself up.
    He tilted his head again. Did we want to do something, then? Did you have any plans? That don't involve...conversation? So we-- or you-- don't keep doing... this? A little smile made itself onto his face.

Snowpaw glanced up at Ashpaw as the grey tabby got to his paws. Seeing the small smile on his face, the white apprentice smiled back, though he was still a little embarrassed. Slowly getting to his paws, he thought of this they could do together. "Um...What do you want to do?" He questioned, fully aware that there would be no answer. "We could maybe replace the queen bedding. Or we could listen to the elder's story. Move your head up and down for the Nursery and side to side for the elders, okay?" Snowpaw meowed, stretching his limbs and giving a small shiver as a cold, leaf-bare breeze hit him.

"So, how is your sister? Good?" Snowpaw questioned, curious about the calico. She seemed alright, but he liked to hang out with Ashpaw more than he did with her. Or with Thornstream, Smokepaw, or his brothers and sisters. but most of all, Ashpaw. He was just more interesting. He lacked the ability to speak, but that only interested him more. Looking back at said tom-cat he patiently waited for a answer.

    Ashpaw frowned. Hmm... he thought. He decided that doing something helpful for the Queens would be a nice thing. Even though he wasn't really the most social cat, it always made him a little happier whenever the kits or Queens smiled at him. So, he gave a little nod of his head. And then a second nod at the question about his sister. Flamepaw seemed all right. For Flamepaw.
    He then gave a little flick of his tail and started toward the nursery, looking back at Snowpaw. Doing something active with his friend seemed like a fun idea to him. He was rather sick of sitting around. He liked to feel useful, since his words would never be a contribution to those around him. He would learn to rely solely upon action.

Snowpaw grinned as Ashpaw took off towards the nursery. His sister and mother were both queens at the time, and he had promised the kits he would visit them soon. Racing after the younger tom, he smiled. "Oh! You can meet Duckkit and my sister. Duckkit is deaf, but she is really cute and fun. If you really want to, she knows a little bit of words, but she can only mouth them. All she can say right is most of her families name. My sister is her mom. Her name is Fawnspots. Three of her little kits are deaf, so none of then should judge you for being mute. Not that that's a bad thing." He meowed, casting a warm smile at Ashpaw. Duckkit was sure to get along with the tom-cat. After all, she was just like him, only deaf.
