For the First Time in [Almost] Forever || Misa

Ever since Sharpfire had snapped at her, Mistsky tried to keep her distance from the brothers. Jaggedstream had gotten severely injured during the battle with LeafClan. He almost died, actually. That was what began putting Sharpfire so on edge. Sharpfire was very protective of his brother, and he was even more so after Jaggedstream's near-death experiences. but Jaggedtream was Mistsky's friend too, so she was also really concerned and scared for him. She had gone to visit him - or them since the striped tom almost never left his brother's side - one day. The whole scene was rather discouraging since Mistsky couldn't do anything to help, so she began pacing. Accidentally, the clumsy young she-cat had stepped on Jaggedstream's tail, causing Sharpfire to lash out to protect his injured brother. Even now, he was still pretty distant. Mistsky didn't avoid him, but she didn't seek him out either. She was afraid that he was still mad at her. but she missed the tom and their easy friendship. It had lasted from when they were small kits up until seemingly that moment. She didn't want to lose it forever.

And so now the young she-cat found herself carrying a fish and two water voles towards the Warrior's den. Nervousness pricked at her black pelt. Mistsky hadn't really talked to Sharpfire since the...well, she guessed it could be called a fight. Though she hadn't really done too much to defend herself at that time. Mistsky was mostly just surprised and...hurt. If only she wasn't so clumsy. It might now be too late to rekindle their friendship, but she had to try. She couldn't live with herself if she didn't. Rippleshadow had even encouraged her to go make things right again. She had also said something about helping the ones you care most about, which Mistsky had agreed with. Although, the young cat didn't fully understand the deeper meanings behind those words, and she still didn't as she ducked into the den. And she probably wouldn't for a while longer.

One would think that seeing the two toms inside the den would reassure her, but the sight did quite the opposite. It made her much more anxious. The fur on the back of her neck spiked up, and she forced it to lie flat again. Why was she so scared? She was normally such an outgoing and overall loud cat. Now, she was retreating into some inner shyness she never knew she had. "Umm...hi," she said around the mouthful and not meeting anyone's gaze. She placed the prey into its own little pile near the two toms and backed up to sit down a few tail-lengths away. "I...thought you might be hungry so...I went out and caught something..." Her copper eyes lifted slightly to look at Jaggedstream - the easier one - before flitting over to Sharpfire and finally settling at some point between the two.

Everything had been different.

Jaggedbreeze hadn't been sleeping as well anymore. Truth be told he hadn't had a full night's amount of sleep since the battle. Every time he closed his eyes he saw the cat who could have easily taken his life away, and nearly did. Every time his eyes closed the coppery smell of his own blood washed over him. He heard the yowls and the cries as another life was lost. He heard the desperation in the voices of all the clan cats. What hurt the most though, is every night he heard his brother. This was something Sharpfire didn't know. Every word in the Medicine cat's den after his vision and consciousness went out, he heard. He heard the cries of belief that his life was lost. He heard the angry and desperate pleas to Nightpoppy to save his life... and every night he had to hear them over again.

Then there was Sharpfire. He was constantly on edge, snapping on everything and anything. If you so much as breathed in his presence at the wrong time, there were mouthy words at your throat. His brother was all he had left, he never left his side. That night he had dropped Jaggedbreeze off with the medicine cat he paced around the clearing until sunrise, and only slept when his body gave out. Needless to say, he set himself up for trouble a lot more then he knew he should have. 

And only now were things beginning to air out. 

The end of the day was nearing and the two brothers had called it a day having patrolled together earlier. 

"Sharpfire?"

The striped tom moved his tail from over his eyes and picked his head up eyeing his brother. They swam with a mixture of exhaustion, concern, curiosity, and a bit of confusion, "Hmm? What's up?"

"I'm not gonna be able to sleep with your growling stomach, now go get something to eat." There was a faint trace of humor, but the warrior had been a lot drier lately then before, however he was still as friendly as ever, "Also, one last thing. I never got a chance to say thank you for everything."

With a silent purr Sharpfire laid his head back down, "No need, Jaggedbreeze. You know I've always got your tail."
For a moment a brief feeling of warmth spread over the two brothers, and it seemed in that moment Mistsky chose the right time to make her appearance. The two lifted their heads as they heard someone move towards them and a familiar scent washed over them.
Jaggedbreeze gave a slight smile to lighten having sensed the tension, while Sharpfire simply stared. It'd been a while since the two were face to face like this, and unlike last time, a feeling of comfort and familiarity washed over him.
He stayed silent however and Jaggedbreeze was the first to speak up, "Thank you, Mistsky." 

Sharpfire stared at her, giving nothing away and mumbled his own thanks, silence washing over them once again. 
This was going to be interesting.

This whole thing was silly and embarrassing. There was no reason to be acting like this. Her acting like a mousebrain was not helping anything at all. It was probably making everything even worse than it needed to be. Sharpfire and Jaggedstream were her friends after all, and Mistsky did not need to be dwelling on the past. The only way forward was to work towards making the future better.

Both of the brothers thanked the she-cat for the prey, although Jaggedstream sounded a little more grateful for it. It frustrated her that Sharpfire couldn't have the decency to show a little more appreciation because she had worked her tail off to catch that prey. PLUS it was Leafbare, which made everything so much harder. She should have just taken the fish to the fresh-kill pile if he didn't want it. Mistsky was about to retort back her thoughts when she stopped short of the words gushing out. That kind of thinking wasn't what she was visiting them for, nor was it something that could rebuild friendships. A...more gentle approach was probably needed. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes during the exhale. Once opened again, those copper eyes were as sparkly and happy as ever. "You're welcome!" she beamed, tilting her head a bit to the side. "You have no idea how hard it was to catch all that in Leafbare." (OOC: Let's just pretend she only brought two, a fish and an itty bitty vole, cause I didn't realize it was Leafbare atm >.>)

Now came the more difficult part...actually talking. Her first instinct was to blurt out what was on her mind, but...maybe she should see how things stood first. She didn't even know what she really wanted to say anyway. The young warrior turned her attention to Jaggedstream. "So how are you healing up?" Leaning in only a mouselength or two, she added, "And I hope your keeping an eye on him." On the word 'him', she jerked her head towards Sharpfire as if revealing some big secret, although she had intentionally talked loud enough for both brothers to hear her. Laughter sparkled in her eyes and her tone was light and joking, but she could only hope that someone didn't take something the wrong way.

Sharpfire's thoughts were like a ticking clock, except more like the minute hand then anything- slow and gradual in the way it moved. How exactly was he supposed to be feeling right now..? He itched to try to regulate the three warriors's relationship again, reach out to her. but oh what a shame, pride shouldered it's way forward instead. Eyes remaining glued onto Mistysky, his expression continued as such- flat, blank, and unreadable.

"I bet. I couldn't have managed half of that myself, haha! Still in a bit of rehab, that Leafclanner sure did his number on me." A light-hearted, easy going laugh exited Jaggedbreeze's mouth. Always the less hot headed of the two, and besides, what good would two grumpy hags do for their friend? None. At all. "Have you eaten anything yet since you've been back?" Sharpfire simply grunted before settling his head on his front paws, moving his attention to his brother who was in the process of standing up and stretching, so he could sit and properly talk with Mistsky. 

Hmph.

"Hmm? Pretty good actually. Got some new scars to try and impress and coo the ladies with." A subtle flirtatious smile arose on the spotted tom as he winked suggestively. The deep purr that followed however danced with humor, making the playfulness in his actions clear.

Sharpfire's ears darted backwards, and his eyes peeled. Unbeknownst to him, jealousy cooed in the back on his mind, glowing subtly within his eyes. What do you care...

Mistsky's eyes flitted to Sharpfire as Jaggedbreeze spoke. Her friend's expression was blank--impossible to read. Frustration and the overwhelming urge to stick her rosy pink tongue out at him swept over her. Why did he have to keep being so difficult! In the next moment, Mistsky's attention returned to Jaggedbreeze, the only one who seemed to be paying any attention to her. "Once you recover, I'll personally search for that LeafClanner so you can do twice as worse back," the she-cat responded light-heartedly, but mischievousness glowed in her copper eyes. If he wanted her to, Mistsky would. That's what friends do for each other. "No, I haven't, but I'm fine. I caught that for you and Mr. Grumpy over there after all," Mistsky laughed, her eyes darting quickly over to Sharpfire, almost as if she had to steal the glance, and back to his brother. "You two enjoy it."

Mistsky rolled her eyes at Jaggedstream's wink and words, but she couldn't hold back the laughs they caused. "Oh, really now?" she teased, the sarcasm in her voice as obvious as her pelt was black, "I'm sure they'll be all over you as soon as they're cleared to be within five fox-lengths of your presence." The she-cat bowed exaggeratedly, as if Jaggedbreeze was an important king that had been kind enough to grace her with his audience, "I'm honored." As she returned to a sitting position, Mistsky glanced at Sharpfire again. This time, she could read something on his face. His eyes. Something she hadn't seen on him before, but had witnessed with her friends. Was he...jealous? What for? How...cute. The sight brought a small, hidden smile to her face. Mistsky turned to Sharpfire and addressed him directly for the first time in what felt like forever, "Jaggedstream'll steal all the ladies before you even get a chance if you don't sit up properly when talking to one." Her tone was still light-hearted but bossier than it had been with Jaggedstream, just like old times.

Jaggedbreeze purred, a chuckle escaping his lips as it faded away. He definitely wouldn't put it past the older she-cat to do as she said after all, she had been the one to convince the two brothers to sneak out of camp, in leafbare where they could freeze to death or catch greencough, when they were merely young kits. Those were the times. It seemed like that had happened so long ago, must have been 20 or so moons since that day. "I don't think there'll be a need for that, Sharpfire sure did his number trying to get that cat off of me."

That compliment sure did change the striped tom's attitude. It went without saying he was a tad bit full of himself, cocky and confident when at his prime. Especially after being mentored by the former leader, Otterstar. The jealousy faded and instead his yellow eyes lit up, "Senior warrior too. I'm sure I left him a scar or two." A smug grin on his face, Sharpfire finally decided to lift his head up and remain attentive to the words being exchanged.

"Oh shut your mouth, you cocky furball. None of that would've been possible without me." And that was true. Perhaps if things had gone better he would've been able to better acknowledge this fact, but they didn't so he simply nodded curtly taking a bit out of the vole that his brother had placed in front of him upon Mistsky delivering it, "Here. Not much but you deserve something." Sharpfire nosed the remaining half towards their friend. She needed to eat and he didn't want Jaggedbreeze having to spare the little he got. He needed every last bit that he could get if he were to recover fully and well soon enough.

Jaggedbreeze glared at the black warrior and growled playfully, "You did not just roll your eyes at me. I am royalty, how dare you! My bodyguard shall have to take care of you now! And what a shame, we were getting along so well." A mischievous glint appeared in the depths of his green eyes, narrowing so they looked at his brother. It was a silent message but he just gave a slight nod, rising to his paws, a crouch rather. "Get her, my brother!"

Sharpfire lunged forward playfully tackling Mistsky into a nearby nest. His brother let out a celebratory "huzzah", but the striped tom ignored it and pressed his nose against the she-cats. "I don't quite remember saying that you could be within five fox-lengths of the mighty Jaggedstream." Since the last time the two had spoken his voice had matured and deepened, turning a bit husky. "Though what's that you say about him stealing all the ladies? I tend to think of it as... sitting back so he can get a chance." A smirk curled up onto his lips, like a switch had been flipped inside him. It'd been a while since he'd gotten a chance to flirt, much longer since with one as pretty as she. Yeah, that's right. He thought his kit-hood best friend had grown into quite a pretty she-cat.

*warrior walks in* WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY NEST

Mistsky chuckled softly as the two brothers exchanged banter. Even grown up they couldn't stop arguing with each other, though it was more teasing and playful. It made her think briefly back to her own brother, Crowkit, and wonder what he would have been like had he still been alive. Would they tease each other like this? Based off her memories, Crowkit hadn't sounded like the teasing type. but maybe he would have grown out of his shell like Jaggedstream had? He also seemed like he would have become good friends with Sharpfire's brother. Would things have turned out much different if Crowkit was still here?

Sharpfire nosed the remainders of his vole towards Mistsky. "Thanks," the she-cat murmured and crouched down to bite into the prey. It was a little cold now, but still tasted pretty good after not eating all day. Once finished, she used her tail to brush away the inedible parts to the side of the den and turned back to Jaggedstream. His playful growl made her laugh, but then the full meaning of his words registered in her brain and the smile faded. She eyed the two toms, confused and suspicious. What are they planning...

The she-cat let out a squeak as Sharpfire surged forward and crashed into her. Her back landed on something soft--probably a nest that was now destroyed--and the larger warrior ended up...on top of her. Mistsky squirmed underneath the tom, trying to get away, as Jaggedstream seemed to be celebrating her 'defeat'. What happened next was extremely unexpected, though not at all unwelcomed. Sharpfire's cold-from-Leafbare nose pressed onto her own, and Mistsky froze. Her copper eyes widened in surprise. Her heart fluttered and breathing quickened. Mentors and apprentices touched noses, but that wasn't it. That was something different, something...else. Or was it? At least it felt like it had been since there wasn't really any other explanation. Maybe he was testing her? For what though? Mistsky's mind started to ache, even though it was still happy. She just didn't really...know what it was, or what brought it on. Great. but, she thought she might as well go along with the handsome tom's flirting game. He really had changed from that fluffy, young, and maybe slightly obnoxious (hahaaa) kit back then. "Well, you didn't really give him much of a chance this time." A subtle flirtatious smirk (IMAGINE NALA) snuck onto her face. "Any particular reason?" she asked innocently.

Jaggedbreeze sat back staring at the two for a moment. Whelp... that certainly wasn't what he had expected. Nonetheless it was good that his brother was taking a break from following him everywhere, every second of the day. Sometimes he swore he couldn't even relieve himself without his brother following to make sure he was okay! At first it had been well needed, but now... now it was just a bit extreme. The fur-ball needed to calm down. And now he was. He was finally beginning to unwind, and that in itself made the spotted warrior feel better then before. Settling down into his nest, Jaggedbreeze began biting into the fish that he had been given. Cold and still a bit slimy- better then nothing.

The injured warrior wasn't the only one enjoying the bliss of Sharpfire being himself again, he himself was loving it as well. A joking frown replaced the previous smirk, his voice hinting at hurt or offense,"What, is my brother really that much better then me that you'd rather him then me? Tsk... that's a shame." Lifting his broad head up, he shook it from side to side in disappointment before leaping up and off of Mistsky, "I'll leave you be then, your secrets safe with me." A cocky lopsided, not-so-trustworthy smile lit up his face, followed by a wink, before he began casually walking towards the den entrance. He was either going to get killed for this, or it would turn out like the funny light-hearted joke it was meant to be. There was also the possibility that she would try to kill him, follow him out of the den after he darted, then it end up turning into a game. Here goes nothing. "By the way, Jagged, Mistsky has a crush on you!"

With a screech the tiger-like tom spent no more time in the den before darting out. Mistsky would be faster then him, should she choose to pursue him, but at least he was running on a head start.
And then there was Jaggedbreeze- poor guy nearly choked on his last bite of fish, coughing, before glaring the way his bigger brother had left. Just like old times.

No no, that wasn't what she had meant. Exactly the opposite, maybe. but Sharpfire's frown and hurt tone made Mistsky want to tease him more. "That's right. The one needing the bodyguard is almost always better," she said matter-of-factly. Mistsky then turned her head to the side, closed her eyes, and stuck her nose up as if Sharpfire was some repulsive creature. After a few moments, the black she-cat opened one eye to peek up at the tom and the corners of her mouth curled into a small smile, betraying the playfulness in her previous actions.

After Sharpfire leaped off of her, Mistsky rolled onto her belly and stood up. She gave her black pelt a good couple shakes to get rid of any scraps of moss and rolled her eyes at Sharpfire. Yeah right, any secrets would definitely be safe with him, especially with that so very reassuring mischievous grin. As he began to back away towards the den entrance, the she-cat narrowed her eyes in suspicion. He looked like he was planning something... Something mouse-brained. The thought of what Sharpfire might do didn't cross her mind because it hadn't seemed like there were really any secrets to keep safe. And then he said it.

Mistsky's ears burned hot with embarrassment. She let out a hiss as Sharpfire sprinted out of the den, "Hey, you fox-heart! Don't just leave!" The black warrior nearly dashed out after him before she remembered Jaggedstream--who was sort of the root of the problem in a way--was still there. "I'm, uh, really sorry," she said quickly. Sorry for his brother's outburst, sorry for leaving him alone (though Jaggedstream would probably appreciate his brother's absence), sorry for not bringing more prey. However the spotted tom wanted to take it. "I'll go, uh, take care of that furball for you." Mistsky spun around, bolted out of the den, and headed out of the camp into the territory, where she assumed that dumb Sharpfire had gone.

Jaggedbreeze pressed his ears against his head, still staring at the den entrance where the other two had gone speeding out. Finally some peace and quiet. He had come into the den to go to sleep anyway, and not that he didn't enjoy his old friend's presence, but he was tired. The patrol earlier had taken a lot out of him. Grunting a delayed "alright" to Mistsky (who had already left) he placed his head down on his paws, pushed the fish remains to the side, and closed his eyes. Maybe this was all just a delayed start to something new. Maybe they were starting to look up.

Meanwhile while the spotted tom was getting his well deserved rest Sharpfire was very much alive, golden eyes livid. Where do I hide, where do I hide? When he was younger and smaller the camp was full of opportunities. All the dens served as a hiding spot because they could fake it as an innocent mistake, but now as a large warrior things got a bit trickier. Now everything was registering and flying through his head in a matter of second, so he wasn't paying much attention to his surroundings. It goes unsaid he got some glares from warriors, some strange looks from elders, some curious excited stares from kits. The striped tom dashed into the nearest den which just happened to be the nursery. Shooting an apologetic look to them he stalked to the back waiting a few before he heard angry footsteps pounding in the clearing. There she goes.

Popping his head out first, Sharpfire bounded out trotting to the camp entrance which Mistsky was now about halfway through, "Hey mousebrain, looking for someone?" Just like when he was a kit his voice was loud as he called out, probably more so then necessary.
Not even checking to see if she turned around he turned and darted off towards dirtplace, barely squeezing through the secret escape, and beelined to the river. Now this is a major flashback. Huh... that night when we were kits I was arguing with Jaggedbreeze before we headed out this way, and now I got an angry she-cat chasing after me. Never fails.

Oh my, that was a longer wait than I thought. Whooops.

That mousebrain! That foxheart! That StarClan-forsaken piece of dung! Mistsky's mind was blazing with livid thoughts. How dare he. How dare he. That rotten piece of crowfood! How dare he. Next time she saw him, she'd give him a good smack on the head and teach him how a decent warrior acted. Her Clanmates gazes burned into her pelt, making her hot with embarrassment.

Suddenly from behind, not in front of or to the sides or anything sensible like that--no, from behind--Mistsky heard his voice. Its loud tones were surprisingly reminiscent of more simpler times, when they were all kits and had no responsibilities to keep up with. And she wasn't severely pissed off. How. Dare. He. Her head whipped around so fast that one might have thought she snapped her neck. She glared at him, a fiery aura erupting around her, but he was not looking. Instead, Sharpfire bolted off deeper into the camp and out of sight. Mistsky let out a hiss. No way she was going back in there! How humiliating! but why didn't Sharpfire come into the forest? He was trapped in the camp now. Wait... The dirtplace!

Mistsky bolted towards the dirtplace's exit from camp. She did not go back into the camp and out the way Sharpfire went; the she-cat ran around the edge of camp. When she arrived there and noticed her target was already gone, she dashed into the forest in pursuit. but rather than following in his wake, Mistsky veered off a little to the left, aiming to pass him and cut him off further down. Her fury pushed her faster than any other force could have, even if twenty badgers were chasing her. She weaved nimbly through the pines, not missing a step with the running that matched the thumping of her heart. Don't you dare think you're getting away. We both know you won't.
