Seeing the world (Starling)

Heatherfur yawned, stretch, and then got out of her nest. She walk outside of the warriors den and blinked her eyes a few times as her eyes adjusted to the morning sunlight. It was finally starting to warm up outside; prey was also starting to come back out of hiding. Her stomach growled, so she walked over to the fresh-kill pile and was greeted by one of her children.

"Hi, Mom! Do you want to share this mouse with me?" Ravenpaw asked her.

"Sure, darling. Thanks," she mewed. They shared the mouse and talked a little about how everything was going. When they were finished, Ravenpaw asked, "Do you want to go hunting with me?"

"Ooh, that sounds like fun! but, I've got to take my apprentice out training. Maybe we can later?"

"Oh, okay. I'll see you later, then," he mewed, a little bit of disappointment in his voice. Then, she walked over to the apprentice's den.

"Sedgepaw?" she called quietly into the den, trying not to wake up the other sleeping apprentices. She was excited to finally have her own apprentice. Now, her mate couldn't tease her about not having one! She waited patiently for her apprentice to appear.

The chocolate brown tabby had already been awake for some time, preferring to be up early to check to see if the elders were awake or hungry yet before eating. It didn't bother him too much, not to mention they usually left him alone for the rest of the day since he was the first to dote on them and give them attention. For this reason, Sedgepaw had picked at a mouse nearly an hour before Heatherfur had arisen and simply gone back to his nest, his eyes never staying shut for too long as he napped into the morning.

At the sound of his name, Sedgepaw opened his eyes and twitched his ears in recognition. He rose to his paws silently, creeping over the other apprentices with a quietness and agility that came with many mornings of trial and error. Once clear of the nests, the apprentice peeked his head out, blinking back the the predawn light as his eyes focused.

"Good morning, Heatherfur." Sedgepaw mewed respectfully once he could see the cat who called for him, "Is it time to go?" A shy smile crept across the young tom's features, his gaze dropping to look off to the side rather than straight in his new mentor's eye.
A third of his way through training, Sedgepaw knew the basics of hunting and a little more of the applied knowledge when it came to battle moves. He hoped she would take him straight out to work, but he also understood if she wanted to test his skills first to see where she wanted to continue off. All of his unbridled excitement and pent-up energy showed in the way his fur prickled, his paws kneading into the soil expectantly as he glanced up, his green eyes glowing.

"Good morning," Heatherfur mewed back cheerfully. "Yep!" She didn't know exactly what she wanted to do with her new apprentice and an idea popped into her head. 

"Hey, do you want to choose what kind of training we are going to do today?" she asked. Her mentor never let her choose what they did, but she wanted to. Of course she wouldn't let him choose all of the time, but she thought it would be nice to let him at least once. 

She also noticed that Sedgepaw didn't look her straight into her eyes and took a mental note that he might not be as loud as some of the other cats. but it was just the feeling the got; she wasn't exactly sure.

Sedgepaw balked for a moment. He wasn't usually asked for his choice on the matter, so he never really thought you what he wanted to do if given the choice. "Sure." He mewed, his smile brightening, though her remained very much still. He lifted his gaze and then brought it farther up, his eyes rolling to stared at the sky as he pondered his choice.

"Perhaps... Could we practice battle moves?" He felt a little ghost of pride in his chest as he thought about what could happen. He wanted to show her he wasn't a complete failure of an apprentice, even if he had been unsuccessful his last few hunts. He figured, from a logical standpoint, that it would be easy to show her what other said he did well rather than fail his new mentor from the start... He didn't want to be held back in training just because his hunting crouch was as lopsided as a mouse who has had a stroke, or that he had once lost a squirrel because he had hesitated and it had literally bucked him off and bit him before scrambling away to safety.

"Of course!" Heatherfur exclaimed. "but we should probably get out of the camp so we can have more room to practice and not get in anyone's way." She started to walk towards the camp entrance and beckoned Sedgepaw with her tail. 

She stopped a little ways away from camp and waited for him to catch up before mewing, "Do you want to show me what you've learned?"

Sedgepaw felt a tingle in his fur as Heatherfur agreed with his decision. He almost asked her to say it again just to feel another wave of content. "Okay." Sedgepaw mewed, his attention glued to his mentor, waiting until she beckoned him closer before rising to his paws. He trotted the way across the distance until he came shoulder to shoulder with the she-cat and nodded all the way out of camp.

Upon stopping, Sedgepaw glanced around and nodded quietly, his eyes wide. He wanted to impress her, but what if he wasn't as good as he thought? The chocolate tabby took a few moments to compose himself then sidled away a few tail lengths, his tailtip twitching. "Would you like for me to attack?" He mewed, head tilted to one side as he anxiously rocked from paw to paw in anticipation.
