The sleek tabby she-cat arrived in a grassy clearing. Tall birch trees surrounded it. She lay down to wait for her apprentice. This morning she had told Lilypaw to meet her here just past sunhigh. She rolled over in the soft grass, exposing her soft belly fur to the newleaf sun. She purred. Life was good right now. She got up and shook out her fur. Today I am going to be teaching Lilypaw battle moves. She had never been in a battle herself but had heard about them. Rivercloud hoped that she would never need to go to battle. It sounded scary.

It was a day that Lilypaw had been dreading. Today her mentor told her that she'd be learning how to FIGHT. Even the thought of battle made Lilypaw shutter. She was one to settle things with words, not a physical war. Yes, hunting was one of her strengths, and she enjoyed Rivercloud's lesson to her, but fighting, FIGHTING, was definitely one of her weaknesses. The gray and white she-cat hoped that she'd never have to physically fight in her life, but it would be best if she knew how to at least defend herself.

Looking up towards the sky, the she-cat sighed. It was already sunhigh, and that meant that it was time to go. She heaved herself up, padding out into the territory to the agreed meeting place. This day was not going to be a fun one.

Rivercloud looked p as her apprentice arrived. Okay, now we can get started! Now, I know that fighting may not be your strength, but one day you'll have to fight. Leafclan have a special technique that we use to tire out the enemy. To start the battle you'll need to circle the enemy dodging their blows. Then, when they tire out, catch them off guard and pounce. Have you got that? Do you want to try it out on me? All of her previous doubts about teaching an apprentice were gone. This is going to be so much fun!

It was as if Rivercloud had read her mind. Imagining how the technique that her mentor was describing worked, Lilypaw nodded. "Okay," she meowed. Hopefully she'd be able to dodge all of her mentor's blows. Glancing at her mentor, the gray and white she-cat noticed that she looked about as thrilled about teaching as Lilypaw was dreading it. Taking a deep breath, Lilypaw started to circle her mentor.

The gingerish tabby watched as her apprentice began to circle her. She followed with her eyes. Okay, I should go easy on her. She crouched down and lashed her tail. She lashed out at her apprentices muzzle, purposely missing before leaping backwards. She then aimed a blow at her hind leg, hoping to unbalance her.

Lilypaw watched as her mentor's eyes began to follow her. "Dodging" Rivercloud's first strike, Lilypaw's confidence grew slightly as her mentor jumped backwards. This isn't as hard as I thought! Then came the blow to her hind leg. Lilypaw wasn't prepared or expecting the blow, and soon she fell, landing on her face. Embarrassment harassed her like a kit bugging a warrior; it was nonstop. but she was determined to prove to her mentor that she could fight, no matter how much effort it took. Pushing herself to her paws, Lilypaw continued her circling once again.

OOC: I don't mind if you powerplay Rivercloud a little here.

She watched as Lilypaw fell hard on her face. Maybe I want a little too rough there.. She swiped at her apprentice again then darted to her other side before swiping gently again. Remember to keep your claws sheathed he reminded Lilypaw. We're just training.

Lilypaw attempted to dodge her mentor's swipes. The first swipe hit the apprentice in her left front leg, slightly unbalancing her, but it wasn't as bad as when she had fallen on her face. On Rivercloud's second swipe, Lilypaw tried dodging the blow again, but was still hit. I'm never going to get this fighting thing down! Lilypaw flicked her tail to show that she had heard her mentor. Then, another swipe, aimed for her head, came. Lilypaw wasn't quick enough to react, and the paw slammed right into her face. Staggering up, Lilypaw cried out, "I'm never gonna be good at fighting! I can't even dodge right!" She sat down, head drooped, and sighed. She needed to find a different way of looking at fighting...

Then, it hit her. HUNTING! If she looked at fighting like hunting, then surely it would be easier, right? Her opponent's blows would be like tree branches or other things that she'd need to dodge when hunting, and her opponent would be like the prey. Standing back up with a new strategy in mind, Lilypaw began circling her mentor once more, this time actually dodging the blows. Yes! she thought. It really works!

She watched as Lilykit slumped down, defeated. The her apprentice brightened up and managed to dodge her next few blow. She looked as if she was hunting.Great! That's it, play to your strengths! She decided it was time to try something else.. Okay. That's enough. She sat down panting. That was a brilliant idea to use you hunting abilities to dodge my blow. Now let's see how you do in some open combat. She grabbed a twig and placed it at the far side of the clearing from Lilypaw. Then she stood protectively in front of it. Your challenge is to get past the twig, use any method that you think of. Go!

At her mentor's praise, Lilypaw beamed from ear to ear. Her mentor actually liked that she had done that! Then, it was open combat. Momentarily stumped, Lilypaw glanced toward the stick, then at her mentor. Quickly scanning her surroundings, the she-cat apprentice realized that climbing was another of her strengths. She always loved to climb trees, and was quite good at it too. That was the solution to getting past the twig. Sprinting as fast as she possibly could to the nearest tree, Lilypaw quickly scampered to the top. Jumping from a branch to another from a different tree, Lilypaw easily passed the twig. Leaping to lower branches, she made her way to the ground. "There!" she mewed. "I made it past the twig!"

Rivercloud watched, impressed as Lilypaw scampered up the tree and easily climbed through the branches. She then made her way to the ground. That was clever. but kinda defeated the point of the exercise. She crouched down and quickly lept at her apprentice, pinning her to the ground. Remember Lilypaw, play to your strengths.


OOC: Sorry if I powerplayed a bit there, I just thought that it would work best if she pinned her. You can play Rivercloud for the next bit in return if you need :D

Strengths? What strengths could she use when it came to combat? Lilypaw had been surprised when her mentor had pinned her to the ground. Thoughts raced through her head. Do I stay really still like I do when I'm hunting so that no prey sees me? but what affect does that have if I'm fighting? As no more ideas seemed to break their way through, Lilypaw decided to try that technique out. Instead of struggling, Lilypaw lay motionless, pinned to the ground by her mentor. Just like prey... the she-cat apprentice thought. Then, when Rivercloud would have least expected it, Lilypaw jerked herself upwards. Hopefully it was enough to send her mentor off her back.

Surprised, she stumbled backwards. Good move, but now she will need all of her wits about her. She lept to one side of her apprentice, then the other before she darted underneath her apprentices belly and pushing upwards. Not hard enough to throw her apprentice to the ground, but just unbalance her. I'm interested to see what she does next..

As Rivercloud stumbled backwards, Lilypaw felt relieved to have her off her back. The gray and white apprentice caught her breath, just before her mentor had dove under her. Quite unbalanced, Lilypaw quickly got to her paws. Maybe like a giant piece of prey running in the completely wrong direction? she tried to imagine something that might relate to hunting. Turning around, she growled, watching her mentor as if she were a piece of prey. Dropping into the hunter's crouch, Lilypaw dove into (and slightly under) her mentor almost just as she had done to her, but she dared not to attempt to go under her mentor, for she knew Rivercloud's fully grown body would crush her small apprentice-sized one.

The tabby she-cat grunted as Lilypaw dove into her. She instantly went limp and let her apprentice follow her to the ground. She's really got the hang of this! Rivercloud rolled over, away from her apprentice and jumped up. Well done. I think that's enough for today though. You learn quickly, but that's a good thing. She began to smooth down her fur with her tongue. You should be proud of yourself.
