The small, dark shape of a kitten was crouched tails-lengths away from the center of the clearing amidst the daytime bustle of the camp. It seemed like every warrior and older cat was going on with their tasks, and possibly too busy to look down and notice a tiny kit such as Lizardkit as he investigated the pile. No, they certainly didn't seem to be paying attention to him, and he was bored. Bored, bored, bored! What was a kit to do when he felt this way?
Eyeing the prey again, the kit had suddenly thought of an idea; an idea for a new game. Yes, while it was true that the fresh-kill pile always seemed to be in one spot, wouldn't it be more fun if it wasn't? Yes, what if it was a game, a game like hide-and-seek. He could hide the prey, and make it more fun to find. It could almost be like hunting a second time, only this would be something kits would be allowed to do. Lizardkit's eyes glowed at this genius plan. Why had no cat thought of it before? This would be too much fun!
Lizardkit looked around to make sure no cat was watching. It wasn't that he thought he would get in trouble for making a game, but he didn't want the warriors to find out where he was hiding the prey! That would be no fun at all. It was practically cheating. As soon as he was certain no cat was paying attention, he quickly grasped the first piece of prey that he could manage in his jaws; a small fish. Euck! The scales were slimy and slippery, and it made it difficult for him to grip it with his tiny teeth, but after some struggling he managed to drag it across the clearing. 'Where to, where to, ahah!' He crept towards the warriors den and buried one under the moss. He had to make sure of course that they wouldn't be able to see it, and would have to dig it up instead. 'One down!' he scampered away with scraps of moss now littering his pelt, but his tail high and waving.
After several back and forth scurryings, he now had pieces of prey in just about any place his tiny kit paws could reach, leaving only prey that was too big for him to carry. Let's see, there was a small mouse wedged between a den wall, a minnow dropped by the edge of the clearing and shoved under some fallen pine needles, a small waterbird crammed into a hole in the ground by the medicine cat's den, and more pieces of small prey scattered in the beds of just about every den he could sneak into. He even had tried to drag a large fish into the leader's den, but unfortunately it proved too much for him to handle, and somehow the head detached from the rest of it. So, he had just left the head of the fish in the moss, and the tail he had pushed until it was up against the den wall. Phew, it had been hard work trying to find all those great hiding spots, but now he was sure that he had moved all the prey he could manage to carry. It was time for the game to begin!
The dark kit's tail fur was bristling as he was practically beside himself in eager anticipation. Wasn't this a great game, and wouldn't cats be surprised and excited when they found their prey? He sat down outside of the nursery, looking fairly pleased with himself with a squinted gaze as he watched the passing cats and waited for their discovery.
