Get Your Head Out of The Clouds

Oakpaw trailed behind his mentor, flicking his ears when he heard something off to the side. Only one of his ears moved though, since that dumb kit had ripped half of his ear off, a growl started off in his chest but he quickly silenced it. This was no the time to be thinking about the pesky kit, he was supposed to be training to become the best warrior. Then when he was a warrior he could get his revenge on Pebblekit. A smile made it's way onto the apprentices face, his mode was now completely changed. Gone was the gloomy demeanor he had, had when they had left the camp and back was the cocky young Oakpaw that thought the world revolved around him. 

"So, what are we doing today Antfern?" Oakpaw asked coming to stand beside the she-cat instead of trailing behind her. He was now ready to be active in conversation and actually learn, instead of have a pity party.

She had been talking to him, but she knew now that he hadn't heard her. Her eyes turning to him for a moment, she decided to stop. "Hunting. You have to be able to feed yourself and the clan." She paused, studying her apprentice with calm eyes. Then, the female smirked slightly. "Show me your hunters crouch. Once we master that, we will start our actual hunting." The girl replies as she slowly takes a seat. Being apprentice sized, she was smaller than him. Even so, she was clearly the more experianced of the two. Her face and eyes showing it. "I trust you have learned it by now, yes dear?"

Oakpaw turned, rolling his eyes when he was sure his mentor couldn't see him. The large tom flicked his tail at the she-cat, a silent 'yes I know what to do.' Seconds later he he was crouched down, his weight evenly distributed throughout his paws. His body was balanced, his ear turned forward waiting for any sounds, and his tail was laying back behind him not quite touching the ground. His whole body was taught and ready, he could leap on a mouse or even dart off in chase of a rabbit on command. He felt a warm sensation of pride well up in himself. He was proud of quickly and easily he had been able to jump right into is stance.

The young apprentice didn't move a whisker, he was waiting for instruction, moving or talking could possibly lose him the chance of hunting. He would have to stay here and listen o his mentor go on and on about the proper ways to hunt or stand, instead getting to actually practice. Talking about something only did so much before you had to get our paws dirty and actually do something.

[Respronics]

She watched him a moment then smiled softly. "There is a mouse nearby right now. Find it. Catch it if you can and bring it back to me." She instructed calmly. Tail tip twitching with amusement. She adapted to her apprentices and she knew he was an action first, talk later type. So, he would be sent on this task. "Remember, they feel vibrations." She warns as she nods to him. If he messed up, she would correct his mistake can they would try again elsewhere.

Oakpaw scented the air he could smell the creature from his stance, he listened to the rest of his mentors instruction before making his way carefully in the direction of the mouse. It didn't take long before the apprentice spotted the little thing in the undergrowth. Carefully calculating where to place his paws and exactly how much weight to place on them as to not disturb the creature till he was ready. He crouched down low his eyes trained on the little thing, he waited, playing out exactly how it was going to work, going through a checklist of steps in his head. To the side, though, there was a crack of a stick. He hoped for a moment that the mouse hadn't heard, but mice weren't all together that stupid. The mouse darted back into his dwelling in the undergrowth. with an exaggerated sigh the apprentice sat down right where he was.

The tom had no intentions of going back to his mentor empty pawed, but what else could he do? He sat there having yet another pity party, when the strong scent of squirrel made its way over to him. It may not be a mouse but at least it was something. Jumping back to his paws he followed the scent trail till he was able to spot the squirrel. This time he didn't wait as long dropping down, going through the checklist quickly, before pouncing on his prey. It wasn't as easy as he thought it would be, and after a quick chase he had a dead squirrel hanging form his jaws. With his head held high he made his way back to his mentor. The story of why he had a squirrel instead of a mouse already formed in his head.

"Here Antfern,"The apprentice stated after he had dropped the animal at the feet of the she-cat.

[Respronics]

A squirrel? She hummed a moment, as if thinking, before smiling. "I send you for a mouse, and you get me a squirrel. Well done." She praised, as she felt he deserved it. "May I ask, well, why you have this instead?" She inquired. Her green eyes clearly interested. Maybe it was a riveting tale or maybe he had messed up on the mouse thing. Who knew.

The apprentice puffed his chest out with pride as he sat down in front of his mentor. "I went after the mouse, but right as I was about to pounce on it there was a noise that came from off to the side.The tom paused for a brief moment to let the information sink in with the older she-cat. "And I was really upset about the whole thing, but all of the sudden I got the scent of this squirrel, and it was like Starclan was telling me not to come back without food so I followed it."Oakpaw added in the bit about Starclan, he had found when you slip their name in others seem to take your side. It probably wasn't morally a good thing to do, but he would apologize to them about it later.

[Respronics]

Antfern sat there in silence. Listening to her apprentice with intrest. Starclan told him to not go back without prey. She nodded and then stood. "That is good. Following our ancestors orders will make for a good warrior and maybe a leader one day." She praised before nodding to the prey. "Hide that and we will see what else we can catch. After we have enough, we can go back to camp. Battle training will be tomorrow. Until then, after this hunt, I would like to see you resting." She instructs before she smiles at him before turning and trotting off at a slow pace. He would catch up and hunt with her after he hid that catch.

Oakpaw smiled smugly to himself inches mentors back was turned. That Starclan trick always worked, he didn't understand at his age the importance of the ancestors, but maybe at some point he would. Shaking his head away from thoughts like that, the apprentice quickly hide his prey before running to catch up with Antfern. He didn't say a word as he followed beside her, waiting for her instructions on what to do next. He knew they were hunting, but he wasn't sure if she was wanting them to hunt together or separate.

Stopping, she motioned with her tail for him to crouch. "Scent the air. Do you smell that? That is a rabbit a few feet from us. Can you pinpoint it?" She asks with a hushed whisper of a Boise. Glancing back at her apprentice. "Watch me hunt it." She instructs after a long pause. Then, she lurched forward. Leaping into a short chase. The rabbit went down under her paws and she killed it with a swift bite to the neck. Her lean figure was ruffled and her heart was racing. She loved a good run.

Okapi scented the air like he had been instructed, he was about to reply to his mentor to tell her where the rabbit was when she darted off to give chase. His tail flicked behind him as he excitedly watched his mentor hunt. She was fast, faster than he would ever be, mostly because of the size difference. "Woah,"The apprentice began as his mentor came back towards him with her kill between her jaws. "Antfern! That was so cool! Like I didn't think you were cool enough or fast enough but dang!" The apprentice was smiling, a goofy smile that all young toms wear whenever they are impressed with anything.
