Thrushpaw couldn't wait for training to start. He stood alone in the middle of the clearing, kneading his paws in anticipation. Finally, finally he was an apprentice! His heart pounding out of his chest, he waited for his mentor to wake up.
His new denmates had complained about the amount of work that had to be done, and the little sleep they'd gotten. To Thrushpaw, this was all haredung. Sleeping in was for kits! And that's what they weren't. Grow up!
And his mentor was Foxclaw! One of the best warriors in the Clan, his father had said. One of the best warriors! Thrushpaw did not understand the relationship between his father and the ginger warrior, but another warrior had explained that it was somewhat complicated. Had his dad liked Foxclaw? Or had Foxclaw liked his dad? He couldn't imagine Thrushstar without Cinderstep, his mother, but perhaps there was something between the two toms once.
He couldn't wait any longer. Thrushpaw didn't want to wake his mentor and make a bad impression on the first day, but he found no problem in disturbing his dad. Pushing into the leader's den, he prodded Thrushstar with a paw.
"Dad?" he called, speaking in the large ginger-and-white tom's ear. "Dad? When's Foxclaw gonna wake up?"
"What?" Thrushstar muttered, blinking his eyes blearily. "Do you want something, Thrushpaw?"
"When's Foxclaw gonna wake up?"
"I don't know, son. Get some sleep while you can. He's gonna give you a long day if you don't."
"Can you wake him up for me?"
"No. Go back to sleep."
"Please?"
"No."
"Aw!" Thrushpaw tromped out of the den, back into the clearing. "Hmph!" he muttered. "When's Foxclaw going to wake up? I'm getting impatient here!" he whined, stomping his paws.
