A bit of friendly competition never hurt nobody [OPEN]

It was yet another dreary day around the Midnightclan camp, but was that any surprise? Leaf-bare did that to a cat. More importantly, to Honeybriar, it brought out the barbs in her personality. It was on days like this that it was clear why she got her name, sweet but to the point at the same time, and if you caught her on a bad day... you were one very unlucky tom. Tom, because Honeybriar was a cat that got along much more easily with those of the opposite sex. In her mind, they were so much more down to earth, so much more competitive and didn't take anything to heart. For the most part. The she cats around camp, while some of them Honeybriar got along with, for the most part she found that when they talked about kits or mates, she got bored. She tuned out.

Honeybriar needed to be kept active, kept on her toes.

Moving her beautiful body out of the den, Honeybriars creme pointed pelt was a stark contrast to the dark, dingy day. An easy mix of both dark and light tan dove in and out of her medium length coat, the light patch on her face causing her baby blue's to stand out. Those eyes looked out around camp. Where were they when she wanted to have some fun? And when she said they, she didn't mean the queens sitting about in the nursery. Flicking her feathered tail, Honeybriar frowned and went over to the freshkill pile to select a scrawny vole.

Hopefully she would find some exciting tom to hang out with soon, or Starclan help them all, she would die from boredom.

Oakbreeze pushed his way through MidnightClan's entrance, his jaws filled with the fresh-kill that he had caught from his patrol. He padded to the pile, depositing his prey at the top. He glanced over at Honeybriar, who had just picked up a vole, and nodded, acknowledging her.

"Hello Honeybriar," he meowed, gazing into her beautiful blue eyes. "How are you?"

Oakbreeze could spare some time because he didn't have anything that any cat wanted him to do at the moment like he normally did. He could tell the she-cat needed someone to talk to, as she was obviously bored out of her mind. Oakbreeze grabbed a plump mouse and sat down beside her.

Blue eyes met those belonging to Oakbreeze over the vole she carried in her mouth and she nodded. Good, this looked promising and anything was better than her spending the day waiting for something to do. Her gaze was cool but not cold, the warmth sitting around the outside as she studied the tom. After a few moments, Honeybriar turned and followed him to sit with her vole at her feet. "Oakbreeze," her voice matched her eyes. "I'm great, glad to have some company though. How are you coping in this weather?" Honeybriar had actually never spoken to this friendly tom. He seemed nice and so maybe they could have some fun times together. The pretty she cat was always looking for others to hang out with that she could tolerate. Hopefully this tom was one of them.

"Honestly, I could be better," Oakbreeze meowed. "Leaf-bare is always the roughest season especially when it comes to hunting. It took me forever to catch as much fresh-kill as I did." Oakbreeze loved having the chance to be able to talk to someone like this, seeing as he was always busy. "I'm glad to have some company as well," he purred. Maybe she could be his break from his work, although he could almost never turn down a chance to help.

His amber eyes rested on her. Oakbreeze was glad that he'd caught the she-cat in a friendly mood. Carefully, Oakbreeze took a small bite out of his mouse, trying his best not to be near as messy as he usually was.

"Hi, everyone!" said a new voice cheerfully. Spottedtuft had arrived upon the scene, looking for something to eat. "Top of the morning, you two! How's the duties coming along? I wish I could help," she chattered worriedly, "but my three kits are just such a pawful. Especially Dustkit," she said ruefully, "I don't know where she came from. One day, Firefern just happened to bring along this kit in the middle of the night and dropped her off. She just said, 'take care of this, all right? Her name's Dustkit. I can't nurse her, but you can.' And now, here I am. And I already have two kits!" Plopping down, she sighed and hauled a squirrel off.

"Everyday, it's 'Spottedtuft, look!' and 'Spottedtuft, watch!' It gets so tiring. I'm just glad they're asleep right now, or else they might be trying to sneak out again. Dustkit is always leading them. Wonder who her parents are?" she frowned, not knowing she was blabbing like a fish.

Oakbreeze didn't care that she was rambling. He was the kind of cat to help. He glanced back at Honeybriar, longing to get to know her better, but then turned to face the queen. "I could always help out with your kits if you needed a break sometime," he meowed. Oakbreeze knew that he was sacrificing time that he could of spent with Honeybriar to Spottedtuft, but he couldn't not help a cat in need. His amber eyes shimmered, looking at both she-cats.

"Agh, it's fine," Spottedtuft chuckled. "They're probably too much to handle for you, anyway, Oakbreeze," she laughed. "Three of them, and the most comedic little furballs. I can't get enough, but I can't stand them either. When you have kits someday, you'll understand." Sighing, she heaved herself up. "I've got them sleeping. Want to do something? I'd fancy a run any-day."

Oakbreeze was a little shocked, though he didn't show it. Most other cats would have happily accepted his help, but not Spottedtuft. He stifled a sigh, and instead smiled at the she-cat's comment and nodded. "I guess I will have to wait until that day comes," he meowed agreeingly. "Then I'll really know what it feels like to have kits." Oakbreeze watched as Spottedtuft stood up. "I'll go for a run with you, Spottedtuft," he mewed cheerfully, picking himself up after he'd finished the mouse he was eating. He took a long look at Honeybriar. "See you later," he meowed, waving his tail in farewell as he padded beside the she-cat queen. "Ready?"

At the sound of that cheery greeting, the pretty pointed she cat winced inwardly. This was not exactly the type of company she had been hoping for. It was... just easier for her to get along with toms, none of this babbling gossip the queens all seemed to partake in. She sat there eating her fresh vole and trying to tune out the rambling she cat that was way too happy for her own good. In fact, Honeybrair had been looking forward to getting to know Oakbreeze as he was one of the few toms she hadn't seen around an awful much. He seemed like a nice fun tom.

As she was just finishing up her breakfast, Honeybriars ears pricked up at words uttered from the estatic mother.

"I've got them sleeping. Want to do something? I'd fancy a run any-day."

As much as she couldn't stand the rambling of Spottedtuft, Honeybriar had already been keen to spend time getting to know the new tom and so she stood with the others, quite fancying a run herself. Competitive by nature, the pretty she cat loved competing with the others and proving she could do exactly what they could, a better - well in her opinion anyway. "I'll come. Where are we running?"

The mouse landed on the fresh-kill pile with a small thud and the she-cat sniffed at the size of it. The pile was pitiful these day's but she couldn't complain to much since it was Leaf-bare, and no matter how many time's they went hunting they just couldn't find enough prey to fill it up to it's fullest. Foxfire turned away from the pile and began to head back out, only to find a small gathering of young warriors clinging to the entrance. Their body language told her they were excited about something. Disapproval flashed in her stomach at the sight of them lolly-gagging rather then working to improve the Clan in some way; they should be hunting, or fixing the dens, or feeding the Elders, or patrolling, not standing around like a group of birds chattering. Wrestling her true emotions she padded towards the group, and flashed a tight smile. "Hello Oakbreeze, Spottedtuft, Honeybriar, is something the matter?" She asked, subtly hinting at the fact that they were just standing around. The older warrior was up there in senior ranking, and she currently had her eyes set on deputyship. She was charming around many cat's in her Clan, and a lot of them got along with her, but behind closed door's the feline had her own dark secret. "Nothing to concerning I should think, considering that we are all just standing around."

"We were just going for a run," Spottedtuft replied stiffly. She'd never liked the other she-cat; she thought her too stuck-up and closed. However, there were times when Foxfire was nice, and Spottedtuft opted to look past their acquaintanceship. "Care to join?" she asked as an afterthought, "it'll be nice to have a perfect four."

Oakbreeze tensed at the sight of Foxfire's tight smile and at the slightest hint of disapproval found in her tone. He didn't preferably want this she-cat to tag along with them. If she did, Oakbreeze wouldn't have the chance to get to know Honeybriar and Spottedtuft better because Foxfire would be busy making sure that all three of them were hunting, or she would tell Spottedtuft to head back to the nursery to keep an eye on her kits. He didn't want either of those things to happen, and he wasn't thrilled that Spottedtuft had invited her along. Oakbreeze respected the fact that Foxfire wanted to make sure the clan was in order. He wanted to too occasionally, but right now he'd rather be having a small break. Plus, he had just been hunting, so that still counted right? Oakbreeze held back from telling the she-cat not to come. She'd probably disapprove of their run anyway. "No, nothing to be concerned about," he meowed. "It's not like we're planning to take over the clan or something like that," he added jokingly. The tom realized that he probably shouldn't have said that, already imagining the kind of look he'd receive from Foxfire. 'Why am I so mouse-brained sometimes?' Oakbreeze thought to himself.

Unlike the other two, Honeybriar didn't have that much of a problem with Foxblaze, hers more reserved as she met the uptight cat with her bright blues. Yes, the other female might try and stop their antics but at least Honeybriar found her easier to get along with than a rambling, pathetic queen. Well.. it wasn't that she didn't want to hang out with them.. more that she didn't know how. Honeybriar, although she didn't look it, preferred the company of toms. She was.. awkward around she cats often and so just stayed away altogether.


It looked like today she would be hanging out with more females than males.. great. She however was able to use sarcasm also. "Just a run Foxblaze, I'm sure we will come back with some prey if we come across it. After all, we wouldn't want to upset anyone." For her information, Honeybriar contributed to her clan with a fierce heart and she was not about to let this high and mighty she cat give the impression she didn't.

Spottedtuft squirmed uncomfortably. "Yes, I'm sure it'll be productive," she said, trying to reassure her comrade. "We're up to nothing. Loyalty to MidnightClan is a first," she said firmly, in a dogmatic tone. She had always thought of Foxfire as a cat who thought of sterotypes, and she was determined to break hers. Not all queens sat around, doing nothing and gossiping. They could be productive, like Spottedtuft. Her kits had grown up, and it was time to get back into shape. "Well, now, we'd better head off?"

Oakbreeze glanced at Honeybriar, grateful she had said something after him. Once Spottedtuft had spoken he nodded, "Yes, we should get going, or it'll be dark before we come back." They had wasted enough time talking, so much so that if they didn't get going soon the three of them wouldn't be able to go at all. He started to push his way through the entrance, peering over his shoulder to she if Honeybriar and Spottedtuft had followed him. To his dismay the three she-cats were still glaring at each other, except for Honeybriar, who looked as ready to go as he was. "What are you waiting for? Come on already!" he meowed.
