It was cold, and hard to believe leaf-bare was almost over. The wind outside the nursery blew softly, the sound of the ocean comforted the ears and soothed the mind.

Morningdew lay in her nest, the queen breathed heavily. Her stomach felt constant sharp pains and they grew worse by the second.

"Sparrowleaf?" she hoped her voice reached the medicine cat.

StarClan, are the kits coming?

Morningdew was ready to deliver any day now. It would normally be such a joyful occasion, but Leafbare's icy grip still had a strong hold on the Clans. One of the coldest Sparrowleaf had seen in moons. During Leafbare, the chance of kits surviving was less than half of the normal rate, and whole litters surviving was slim to none. The medicine cat had been ecstatic to hear about the possibility of new kits entering the Clan, but he was a little less excited to realize that there was no way for them to be born after Leafbare. but, at least Newleaf would soon begin to warm the sands beneath their paws and help the kits grow. That is, if they lived until then.

Sparrowleaf grabbed a few slightly-shriveled leaves from the dwindling pile of borage and exited from his den. He'd have to take Mintpaw out herb hunting near the Twolegplace soon. There was a very high chance that all the plants would be frostbitten and dead, but Morningdew would need a steady supply of borage to keep her milk up if any kits survived. Hopefully new growth would sprout early into Newleaf because he desperately needed it. With SunsetClan residing on a beach, most herbs were harder to come by than in the forested Clans, which meant he often needed to search outside Clan boundaries for certain plants. It always made him anxious when he had to go so far away since anything could happen while the tom was gone.

"I'm here with your herbs, Morningdew. No worries," he said as he ducked into the nursery, having heard the queen's call. Sparrowleaf placed the borage down in front of her muzzle and warmly added, "I wouldn't leave you by yourself just yet."

Morningdew shuddered, her body tense.

"I'm here with your herbs, Morningdew. No worries," Sparrowleaf ducked into the nursery, and the tension seemed to disperse. Sparrowleaf placed the borage leaves down in front of her muzzle, the hairy leaves tickled her nose, the ends slightly shriveled due to the cold.

"I wouldn't leave you by yourself just yet." his voice was soothing, like the sound of waves lapping the shore.

"Thank you." her voice was just above a whisper surprisingly lower than how she usually spoke, she chewed the leaves -too numb to let the taste bother her.

Her first litter, and the situation was very dire. but Sparrowleaf was here; an experienced cat. The thought helped her relax as she felt the contractions. The pains of labor had begun.

Two kits lay, damp and shivering. Morningdew wearily pulled them closer, a boy and a girl. Almost completely identical. She took the larger kit and began to lick her fur in the opposite direction. Warming their little bodies was her first priority. She did the same for the other kit. Both were cream-colored kittens, with ticked tabby markings.

"I'll name the boy Whitekit, representing the purity of a true SunsetClan cat." There it was. The ignorance of her words would cause much trouble.

"And this little one shall be Willowkit (@fawnstar), beautiful and strong." she nosed the little breathing body, slender like the branches of a willow tree.

"They're lovely." she purred, but the happiness was soon replaced by a sinking feeling. It hadn't just appeared out of nowhere, it had remained in the back of her mind -creeping in slowly.

"Sparrowleaf, will they be alright?" her clear blue eyes flashed with wavering expressions. Exhaustion, fear, pride, happiness.

Willowkit let out a weak squeal, shivering even as her mother warmed her up. She began to crawl forward slowly, trying to reach her mother's milk, desperately needed the nourishment.
