Sorrelnose lay in the nursery breathing softly as the wind blew in airing out the stuffy atmosphere. It carried with it the scent of new-leaf, slowly but surely it was getting warmer. The queen sighed in relief. She was happy her kits would come during a bountiful season. She had seen the other queens struggle with their kits in leaf-bare and had prayed every night for hers to be brought to life in more favorable conditions.
A sharp pain made her gasp for air and stopped her chain of thoughts. The kits!
After painful labor she had given birth to five kits. Nosing them she knew something was wrong. The scent of death crashed in and she let out a heartbroken cry as she found her stillborn baby among the other kits. The little she-cat lay limp and still and Sorrelnose nudged her away. A stillborn kit. Of all the luck. The queen, with a reluctant heart, turned to her living offspring.
She nosed each one sniffing them over twice to make sure they were alright.
"Amberkit, after your grandmother" she whispered to a little she-cat that was the spitting image of herself.
"Mistkit," she nuzzled a pale gray tabby with white splotches and looked over to her sister, the last female, "and Echokit," she stroked the gray she-cat.
Turning to her only son she thought for a moment. The memory of her beloved sister Breezepaw's death flooded back and her voice caught in her throat. A hawk had taken the life of her sister. "Eaglekit...you will be called Eaglekit." she meowed with a wavering voice. Afterall, hawks were no match for eagles.
