I just noticed genetics plays a huge role here at AWRP. I mean, as far as I know, you can't have a blue-eyed cat unless its pelt is white. Though I've seen a lot of cats have blue eyes without white pelts, so genetically it's plausible/possible/likely, but we all know that.
However, I'm wondering what about deafness? Around 75% of all white-pelt, blue-eyed cats will be deaf.
I know we obviously can't force people to have deaf characters, but that is a genetic trait-- if something like eye color is prohibited/controlled (likely to refrain from having only blue eyed kits?), why isn't something like deafness made more accurately aware?
Essentially, if we have 10 white-pelt, blue-eyed cats, majority of them might be deaf. Is that something that's ever come up here at AWRP?
Not all white cats have to have blue eyes. So, people are free to make cats with green or copper eyes, right?
but say they wanted their cat to specifically have blue eyes. Pure white pelt (not patch), blue eyes: should they have a right to accept and understand that it is incredibly likely that character will have been born with genetic hearing problems?
So if you take all the white cats with blue eyes here on AWRP and they are not showing genetically correct statistics, what does that mean?
Do the genetic-possible (eyes, coat, etc) only rule apply to characters or just kits?
Should something be added to the store in order to create a white pelt, blue eyed cat-- say, a roll, so to see whether they are to be created deaf or not by their roleplayer?
Not advocating AGAINST the blue-eyed rule, just wondering if this was ever thought of or calculated for the forum. I would think it'd come up mainly when kits are born, and a roll is set out to determine whether or not they will be deaf: I've seen that done, and know that it happens, but with character creation it is a little different. We don't want a bunch of blue-eyed cats running around, but what about a bunch of cats that are defying genetics?

"Of those white cats with one or two blue eyes, 60-80% are deaf; 20-40% have normal hearing;" (messybeast.com/whitecat.htm)

If a white cat has 2 blue eyes, it is 3-5 times more likely to be deaf than a cat with 2 non-blue eyes, and a cat with 1 blue eye is about twice as likely to be deaf as a cat with 2 non-blue eyes. In addition, longhaired white cats are 3 times more likely to be bilaterally deaf. (www.icatcare.org:8080/advice/cat-health/inherited-deafness-white-cats)
