Riverleap blinked. And blinked again. It was morning already? Yawning, he lifted himself upright and silently padded out the warrior den, most of them were asleep. Dawn patrol had probably gone out already, a few cats were padding around. The wind was cool and gentle on his face, it was nice but just a little chilly. Whispers on the wind, he thought. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Ryelight scolding his new apprentice, Thrushpaw about letting queens and kits eat first. That reminded him that he also had a apprentice, and his duty today was to show him the borders. Walking over to the apprentice den, he poked his head in. Most of them were asleep, except for that Thrushpaw, always the earliest waker. He spotted his own apprentice, Cloudpaw, her fluffy body still curled up in a ball near the entrance of the cave. "Cloudpaw, he gently meowed, Cloudpaw, time to wake up. I promised I would show you the borders today," he whipered

Cloudpaw started at the sound of her name and opened her amber eyes to see her mentor, Riverleap, hovering over her. She uncurled herself from the ball that she had been laying in and stumbled to her paws, her jaws parting in a wide yawn. "Hi Riverleap!" she meowed happily, shaking out her gray and white fur. "What are we doing today?" She could barely keep still, quivering with excitement from her nose to the tip of her tail. The young she-cat had already been an apprentice for two moons now, but she had never lost the giddiness of a kit whenever to came to doing apprentice duties. Her eagerness was often refreshing.

"Shhhhh," Riverleap whispered. "Your denmates are still sleeping. And today, we're going to hunt a little, return to the Clan to eat, then we're going to go see the borders." Riverleap smiled. He loved the energetic enthusiasm of his apprentice. "Come on," he said with a flick of his tail. "It's a little chilly outside so the sooner we get moving, the sooner we can go!" Riverleap had much planned for the day. He hoped he could do it all, the sooner Cloudpaw learned, the faster they could go. Riverleap ran outside. He had been told he was a formidable runner, and hoped Cloudpaw could catch up. "Come on!" Riverleap shouted back to Cloudpaw, fur bristling in the wind,

Cloudpaw shot after her mentor, using her long legs to stay on his paws as much as she could. Cloudpaw was a decent runner, but she was nowhere near as swift as Riverleap, and she was huffing and puffing by the time that they reached the beach. The young she-cat slowed a little, her fur bristling at the sight of the water lapping at the sand only a few tail-lengths away. She wasn't a very good swimmer, and water frightened her. She darted over to her mentor's side, pressing her pelt against his absently.

"Cold, isn't it?" Riverleap smiled. He wasn't one picky to personal space, and on a chilly day, someone with him was okay. "Well,since we're here, why don't I teach you how to catch a fish?" Riverleap meowed. He speedwalked over to a thinner and shallower place at the lake where he knew fish liked to swim. "So, first, to catch a fish, you have to wait, quietly. Loud noise scare fish away. Also, be patient. Patience is a virtue, and fish won't show up whenever you want," Riverleap said. Just than, a fat trout approched. "When the fish comes," he whispered though gritted teeth, "you have to dip you paw in the water, swiftly and quietly since ripples and splashes scare fish away. Claws unsheathed, you have to hook it on your claw, preferably on the middle bottom of the bone where the flesh is thinnest and there's no bones." Riverleap proceeded to dip his left paw in as fast as a bullet, and came out with the fat trout hooked on his claw. He grinned. "Now you try, Cloudpaw."

Cloudpaw sat on her haunches beside her mentor, her amber eyes wide as he yanked a fat trout out of the shimmering depths. He made it look so easy, and the young she-cat was in slight awe of the blue-furred tom. She fixed her gaze on the surface, attempting to dig her claws into the sand when the water lapped closer to her paws. She wanted to spring up and race away, but she swallowed her fear and searched for the flickering shape of a fish. If she was to be a warrior, then she would have to get over her fear of water. A silver ripple caught her eye, and she lashed out with a paw just as Riverleap had. Her claws splashed into the cold water and hooked on something, and she yanked back sharply, snatching a small fish out of the water. It landed in the sand and began to flop around, and she sprang at it, meaning to pin it down and stop it from escaping. Unfortunately, her excitement caused her to misjudge her leap, and she landed with a splash in the water. Terror seized her immediately, and she let out a shocked yowl and shot out of the shallows, coming to a halt as soon as she was clear and crouching in a shivering heap of gray and white fur. It was then that she noticed the fish pinned under her paw, and despite her sopping pelt and the cold wind that nipped at her ears, she looked up at Riverleap with pride shining in her eyes. "Riverleap! I did it!"

Riverleap watched his apprentice look nervouly at the water lapping at her paws. Afraid of water, wasn't she? After Riverleap knew cats for awhile, he could see them right though and read them. He watched amusingly as his apprentice dipped her paw the water, just a little too slow and splashy, and half-hooked a small fish on her claw. Suddenly, she got caught up in the current, it carried her a few fox-lenghts and she came up, spittinout water and shaking her pelt dry. She noticed the fish that was still pinned under her paw, suprisingly, and she mewled "Riverleap! I did it!" Riverleap grinned, padded over to his apprentice and helped her out of the water.
"So, how did I do?" she asked.
"Well, Riverleap replied, that was very, very good for your first try. Next time, your paw has to go in faster and hook the fish faster- the trick is not to let the fish see you." he responded.
"Here, come with me," Riverleap padded over to a sunnier section of the beach. "I'll tell you about the first time I tried to catch a fish." Rivrleap sat down ans started.
"I was very young when I was made an apprentice. My mentor, Birchtooth-" Riverleap cringed at the mention of Birchtooth. "was very nice and asked me, On your first day, what do you want to do? I said 'I want to learn how to fish, of course.' I have always enjoyed the salty and tender taste of fish, so naturally I was very excited. He showed me how first, then he told to try, then, kapoosh! I had reached out to a passing whitefish with my right paw, and next thing I knew, I was in the water! I struggled a lot for a real long while, until Birchtooth came and fished me out. Suprisingly, the fish's mouth was still hooked on my claw, and it was dead because I accendentaly banged it on a rock. From then I learned fishing is easier for me with the left paw, it really depends on what you feel more confortable with!" Riverleap finished off his story with a big smile.

Cloudpaw listened to her mentor speak with wide amber eyes. Hearing his story fascinated her, but she shook out her gray and white pelt and glanced nervously at the water again. "I'm so afraid of it," she meowed quietly, shuffling her paws in embarrassment. "I know SunsetClan cats are supposed to be good swimmers, but I just can't. When I was a kit I wandered out of the camp and fell into the lake. I would have drowned if my mother hadn't noticed I was missing and came after me. She fished me out right as I was close to death, but I can still remember it. Of course, that was before the greencough sent my mother and littermates to StarClan." The young she-cat fell silent for a moment, and then she looked at Riverleap fearfully. "Will I still become a warrior even if I'm afraid of water?"
OOC: Sorry I took so long to reply, I graduated high school last night!

Riverleap listened intently to Cloud paw, but her last line stuck him out the most. "Will I still become a warrior even if I'm afraid of water?" she said. "Oh," Riverleap meowed, "That's totally okay! Even if you are, you can work around it, and you caught that fish didn't you? All that matters is you work hard and face your fears." Riverleap looked around. "Well," he meowed, "how about we go back to the camp, eat some prey, and then I can show you the borders!"
