Mousepaw was a kitten again, curled up happily by his loving mother's belly, purring, dozing off.
He was suckling, fighting his siblings for food.
He was named an apprentice by Briarclaw, a bit disappointed that it wasn't his mother who had named him, but proud nevertheless. "Look, Mom, I'm an apprentice now!"
He was sleeping again, and far off, in MidnightClan's territory, she had given birth to a litter he didn't even know she was carrying. She had gone into MidnightClan's camp, temporarily leaving her kittens behind, and there, she had died.
Mousepaw trembled in his nest, having just thrown up his breakfast. He couldn't take it. He didn't even get to say "goodbye" or tell her he loved her, which he would've done in an instant if she hadn't been ripped away from him from the despicable MidnightClanners who kidnapped her.
Why did everything have to turn out so badly? It wasn't that he didn't think Briarstar would make a good leader, as he definitely believed she had it in her, but in order for her to be leader, Pebblestar had to die, and Mousepaw never thought the day would come so... suddenly, so weirdly. He always expected her to be old, maybe even sick, and he thought he'd be able to go talk to her, maybe lie with her as she left for StarClan. It wasn't going to be pleasant no matter what happened, but why did his mother have to go so savagely?
One apprentice had told Mousepaw to go to Duskflame, as he'd been throwing up ever since he learned of his mother's death. He wanted to, in a way, but he didn't have the energy or the motivation to get up. A few worried peers took turns bringing him watery moss and prey to keep him sustained, but nothing stayed down, and Mousepaw didn't feel like doing anything. He hadn't seen his mentor in some time, so he hadn't a clue what was going on there.
Snowsplash had disappeared a long time ago. It never really bothered Mousepaw that his father wasn't around. On the other hand, Pebblestar had been extremely important to him, and she was the only cat he felt really close to. He loved her dearly, and now that she was gone, he wished Snowsplash was still around, if only to have someone to talk to about it. Duskflame? What did she know about this? She was just the medicine cat who'd done something terrible and was told she'd be leaving the Clan once she trained an apprentice. Would she even care? Briarstar was probably too excited about her new position to be giving any pity to Mousepaw.
There had to be someone he could talk to about this, someone who would listen. This was a Clan, there were cats whose parents died left and right. but how many of them would actually take time out of their day to lend an ear to a mopey, miserable mess of a tomcat?
