A long brown and black tail swished back and forth idly as its owner stared unblinkingly at Talonclan's cave wall. The tall kit glanced back towards the nursery, his green eyes shining in eagerness. Patchmist was busy with Marshkit's siblings and he'd managed to sneak out into the main cavern of the clan.

Now he was trying to figure out a way to literally climb the cave wall in front of him. The dark brown tabby tom leapt onto the wall, his long sharp claws digging into the stone. Marshkit grinned for only a moment before realizing he was slowly slipping down the rock face. His frenetic attempts to go higher resulted in the kit tumbling to the cave floor, head over paws.

Marshkit landed with a thud, tail in mouth. Spitting his tail out, he rolled over with a sigh. Maybe one of the other kits would be interested in playing a game with him.

A set of delicate copper eyes stared out from beside the shadows of the nursery observing every little thing that seemed to be going on in the camp. Perhaps on the outside they appeared judgmental, but on the inside they were taking it all in. Memorizing the little details, and thinking of things that could be done differently. Somewhere in the mass of activity they landed on a kit, much larger then she, attempting to climb the rock face that kept them trapped inside for what seemed like forever.

The fluffy kitten found herself snickering as he tumbled backwards, before standing up and walking towards him from behind, "It'd be easier to find holes in the wall or something you could onto, like a vine." Featherkit's voice came out in a "matter of fact" type of tone, but she cut herself off before she could continuing talking. Maybe you could wrap a longer vine around you for support, and then try climbing using the holes. but she kept that idea to herself before directing her eyes from the wall to the tall kit before her. Next to him she looked like a bug.

Marshkit glanced at the smaller black tabby she-kit, an easy grin spreading over his face. "Oh, probably," he acknowledged, green eyes gleaming with good humor. "but you can't tell me those ways are as fun as climbing like I was." Pushing himself to his paws, the tall tom shook off the dust from his earlier tumble. "My name's Marshkit, by the way. What's yours?" He looked at her long feathery fur with some interest. "Your fur looks really soft."

All she did was shrug. Maybe it wasn't as fun but it sure wasn't as mouse-brained. Maybe if they were older it would've worked out better, but considering both of their ages, they weren't going to get anywhere with such straight forward, head on attempts. They had to think outside of the obvious, take a few steps out of their comfort-
Knock it off Featherkit, what are you doing. No one likes a weirdo. Stop thinking like that.

Internally groaning she forced the voice to leave her head before looking back at Marshkit, "My names Featherkit." Plopping herself down onto the ground she swept her tail over her paws and gave her chest a couple licks, "I wasn't named that for nothing."
Something about acting this way felt forced, but she had it planted in her mind that it would turn out okay for her, No one likes a special kit. Everyone likes a pretty one.

When Featherkit didn't try to argue her side about different climbing possibilities, the dark brown tabby tom felt like someone had let the air out of him. What was the point of a good debate if the other cat gave up right away? Although, he hadn't really sounded like he'd been inviting debate, had he? Marshkit hid a wince by making a show of licking his own chest fur.

"I'm not sure why Patchmist named me Marshkit," he said, chuckling quietly. "Maybe because I look like a big blob of marsh mud or something." He was silent for a moment, his mind returning to Featherkit's suggestions. "How would you climb using a vine, then? The holes I can understand for pawholds, but how do you think a vine would help?" he asked, genuinely curious.

I don't know my mom... The single thought sort of hit home for the young kit. She had a father, Bumblebee, but since the day she opened her eyes she had never had someone to call mama. Granted, she hadn't been around that long, but it'd been long enough to know 'mama', whoever she was, wasn't coming back around. Yet another reason to feel like she was an oddity; another reason to rely so much on looks to feel normal or wanted or less... different.

Featherkit was fished out of her thoughts when the topic was once again drawn back to the topic of climbing the rock face to get out of the camp. At first she thought "oh Marshkit must be trying to prove me wrong again; that's what I get for trying to think outside the obvious about something." The young kit was cut short however by a question regarding her suggestions.

Huh? It caught her so off guard and by surprise that she nearly choked on her own fur that she was grooming, "Are you really asking me that?" Featherkit's copper eyes gleamed and a huge grin somehow worked its way up onto her face; she was excited. As quickly as it came up though, she forced it away. I can't break my act now. Straightening up a bit she nudged her head in the direction of a long vine hanging from the rock face, "Well there's two ways. You could use it as extra support and dig your front claws into it as a more secure hold while your hind legs use the footholds to push yourself up. You could also use your teeth to secure yourself a bit more. Or since you can see that we're small and don't weigh too much you could have a thick, strong vine wrapped around you and tied so it secures you if you were to fall. It would be a lot safer and allow you to focus more on climbing." Her words poured out of her mouth explaining every aspect of the plan and then she looked down at her paws sheepishly, worried about whether or not Marshkit had judged her.

Marshkit nodded eagerly at Featherkit's question, his own green eyes wide with excitement. The tall brown tabby listened to his fellow kit's explanations carefully, looking at the long vine that she pointed out (that he'd missed in his earlier examination of the cave wall) and imagining putting her suggestions into use.

"Clever," he said, smiling. "Featherkit, those are really good ideas!" The striped tom rose to his paws and started towards the rock face. "Do you want to try them out with me?"

It felt pretty good to be praised for her ideas for once as opposed to being scorned at for being "weird" or "different" or "special". In fact, it felt way too good to be real, and she had no idea how to respond. Should she continue being the self-absorbed brat she tried so hard to be, or could she just sit back and be her intelligent little self?

An internal conflict was raging on inside of Featherkit, so she just did what she knew how to do best- put it aside, and just continue as she was before. Besides, she didn't know if this was just something temporary with Marshkit, or if this was really how he was. Hypocritical much? She knew for a fact, better then a lot of others, just how fake cats could be. And she didn't trust it.

"Right now? There are warriors and apprentices everywhere." Copper eyes widening, she leaped to her paws following after her companion. She didn't think he'd actually listen to what she had to say and try to carry it through. Now of all times too!

Marshkit's tall body quivered with anticipation and excitement. He really wanted to try Featherkit's ideas as soon as possible, though she did raise a fair point about the older cats all around. And yet . . . .

"I'm not sure any of them are paying attention over here," he said, double-checking to make sure he was correct. "None of them came bounding over to scold me or see if I was hurt when I fell earlier. I don't think anyone else even noticed." He shared an amused grin with the black tabby she-kit. "If they do catch us, we could just say I talked you into it and the blame's entirely on me."

Satisfied with his reasoning, Marshkit padded over to where the vine dangled near the rock face. The young tom inspected it carefully, wanting to make sure the long plant was solid and unlikely to break under his and/or Featherkit's weight, negligible though they may be. "So, what do you think?" he asked, returning his full attention to Featherkit.

Scrambling over her paws Featherkit followed the kit to the rock face, finding herself standing in front of the vine that she had previously motioned to while explaining her ideas, "You're mousebrained!" Someone must have sneaked some catnip into his meal this morning or something, because there was no way in Starclan that he should've actually taken her idea seriously.

Then again, as crazy as Marshkit was, she had to admit she was very curious herself as to how her plan would turn out. It seemed pretty fairly thought out, and besides he had offered to take the blame as well, what there possibly for her to lose?

No! You can't let him do this. What if he gets hurt!

While she was fairly caught up in herself, it would be rather hard on her conscience knowing that the kit got hurt, or worse, because of her. Tumbling over her own clumsy paws, the black tabby stumbled and fell with her nose down in the ground. Whereas normally she would care, this time she found herself heaving herself up and squealing, "but what if Briarstar finds out? She might delay your apprenticeship!"

And mine as well... but she left that part out. As far as others were concerned, she was a delicate little princess, unwilling to get her paws dirty. "Besides, I've worked really hard grooming my pelt. It's not easy cleaning this much fur and keeping it nice and pretty!" And there it was. The frilly brat was making its return.

Marshkit flashed a wide, toothy grin at the young she-kit at her exclamation. Mouse-brained? Perhaps, but the dark brown tabby tom could not contain his glee. He'd possibly made a brilliant new friend and there was a chance he'd be able to climb higher up than he had before.

but the mention of Briarstar delaying his apprenticeship made him pause, his long tail twitching in uncertainty. "Do you really think she would do that?" he asked, squinting his green eyes in a worried frown. Climbing was fun, but watching his siblings go on to be apprentices while he stayed in the Nursery . . . . Marshkit shuddered. It would be torturous.

His apprehension turned into confusion at Featherkit's last statement. "Wait, what does that have to do with . . . ." The young tom stopped to think about what she'd said in the context of climbing and playing. Understanding, though slow in coming, arrived. "Oh." Marshkit looked over his friend's soft, fluffy fur. Raising a mischievous brow, he said, "I could help with grooming your fur, if you'd like."

"Maybe." Featherkit's voice came out like a snobby know it all, "I mean, she can't go around rewarding bad kits. Or worse, you could get stuck being a kit forever." Well... we, really. Since it would be the both of them. The tall tom could take all the credit he wanted for the idea, but the fact remained that she would still be presented as the one who went along with it even when she knew it was wrong. "Then again it's not like we would be the first kits to try to get out, and I mean look at the wall, it's huge!" There was no way that the two kittens could actually pull off the remarkable feat.

Odds were that she would've kept rambling on if her den mate hadn't interrupted her by speaking himself. Well, it wasn't really an interruption considering that she had been taking a pause from talking. Help me groom my fur? The only time someone had really groomed her fur was when a queen offered as well as when she first came in and her father would help her. Otherwise she'd always groomed her own fur, and that was so much work, especially when it came to her tail. That was settled then. "Hmm... deal."

"It's not like apprenticeship'd be a reward," Marshkit muttered, his face set in a sulking pout. "but I get what you mean." The dark brown tabby kit considered the rock wall one more time before returning his green gaze to Featherkit. Maybe he'd get another chance to climb it when he was older.

The tall tom grinned toothily at the long-furred she-kit as she agreed to his offer. "Great!" he said, eyes gleaming and long tail twitching in renewed excitement. "Would you like me to start with your back and tail?"

Please stop looking so sad, it's making me feel bad. I'm not supposed to feel bad! Ughh. By no means was she going to admit it out loud though. That seemed like quite a common trend. Any thought that didn't revolve around concern of herself she was hesitant to speak, unless it was in scorn or in bad nature to the one she was talking to. Maybe one day she'd grow out of it, but it was a bit hard to tell.

The thought was swept away the moment her new friend was grinning once again. Who knew someone could get so much joy over her agreeing to let them groom her fur. "It's because of how beautiful you are." A snooty voice cooed in the back of her head, increasing her ego seven fold. "Can you help me out with my tail? It got all dusty when I took that tumble." but even with her ego rising, she still managed to find the genuine need and appreciation of Marshkit's presence.

The dark brown tabby kit nodded vigorously at his friend's query. "Sure, I could help you with that," Marshkit said brightly in reply. The tall tom plopped down next to Featherkit, his own long tail tucked close alongside his body. Unconcerned with the inner thoughts and workings of the fluffy she-kit beside him, the young kit began to groom Featherkit's dark-furred tail.
