Nightsong rolled around on the pebbly bank of the heat pool, feeling the smooth pebbles rub away her worries. She purred with contentment, thinking back to when she decided to come here.
She came here to train, to hone her already fearsome battle skills. And what did she end up doing? Relaxing by the heat pool and rolling around like a crazy kit. Nightsong abruptly stopped her luxurious rolling and picked herself up, growling softly. It was time she quit playing like a kit and start working on real business, like obliterating that tree branch from the dead willow a few foxlengths away. Rushing over to the fallen branch, she tore at the ground and dug a small hole. She stuck the branch in and then filled it in with the dirt she'd dug out.
Nightsong backed away and crouched low to the ground. A low, quiet growl escaped her. "You dare to challenge me, Treebranchclaw? The best warrior in all of TalonClan? Elders tell tales of my exploits. The kits watch me in awe. Apprentices strive to follow my example, and being trained by me is considered an honor." The slender black she-cat circled the tree branch with slow movements, her green eyes narrowed against the greenleaf sun. "The queens count on me to protect their kits. By the end of the day, Treebranchclaw, you will be just another cat bested by the greatest warrior the clans have ever known."
Nightsong suddenly lunged for the branch. Her outstretched claws raked it as she streaked by. Turning around, she leaped for "Treebranchclaw," but upon her landing, her front right paw slid on a stray pebble and it slid under her. She crashed to a stop at the foot of the tree branch. To make matters worse, the collision caused it to be dislodged from its hole and fall on top of her body.
