Mottled paws stepped silently across the snowy landscape, careful not to cause too loud of a crunch underfoot as the dark mass of fur travelled. While it was general knowledge that snow was soft and powdery, it should also be known that the sensation and its sound could be crisp, and, though satisfying for those younger of age, would startle, alert, and potentially scare off prey. In the pitiful season of leaf-bare, where prey was scarce and cold weather made illness spread rapidly with the disgustingly low availability of herbs.

All that walking caused a considerable amount of frost to stick and pile up on Nightowl's pelt. If it weren't for the fact that the cold was beginning to bite into his skin, he would actually keep the white powder on his fur, mostly as a means of camouflage. The tom shook it off, a snort of mild amusement escaping him. He resumed his track forward, his bright blue eyes glinting in the darkness of early morning. One might find it strange, perhaps even suspicious, to be up and about hours before dawn made its call on the land of the living; Nightowl was slightly peculiar in that sense, but it wouldn't be his fault entirely. He had a little habit of waking earlier than the rest, and that was about it.

White blanketed the land, heavy and suffocating to many that wanted dry land under their feet and pollen in the air. The snow awoke the shadows in the forest that Midnightclan called home, bringing them out in force and making the trees stand closer and taller than usual. Prey hid away from the biting frost and hungry felines, most likely deep beneath the frozen earth or high in the trees. They were few and far between, hard to see and even harder to catch. but sometimes, if you looked closely...

They ventured out.

A brown squirrel descended the tree, reaching the bottom and making its way along the icy floor, whiskers pulled back as small feet scurried. but it was not alone, its movement alerting bright blue eyes that locked on their target and refused to let go. The owner shifted slightly, chocolate paws light on the snow, ears trained forward, gaze determined. Hunting - she could think of a 100 other things she would rather be doing but as there were no fights to be fought or meetings to attend, this was all she was left with.

And Snowblaze was not about to be left sitting idly about camp. She was too valuable a warrior.

The squirrel edged closer to the danger it were oblivious to, causing the feline to lean forward on her toes, tail straight out behind her. So close, so almost ther-

The crunching of ice had her eyes shooting from prey to foe, and so did the eyes of the lucky squirrel who at a moments notice ran up the nearest tree. "Starclan," Snowblaze cursed, making a last attempt and lunging at the scrawny meal as it disappeared into the naked oak. Spinning around with ice in her eyes to match the scenery, Snowblaze faced a seemingly oblivious Nightowl traipsing through the snow with his large, clumsy paws.

"And just what do you think you are doing?" the siamese cut out into the winter air. "Did you even stop to think about what was going on around you, mousebrain? Congratulations, one less mouth is fed tonight because of you."

The Bengal silently cursed as his paw took its landing through the snow. The scent of squirrel drifted towards him a heartbeat too late, for it came right as his paw pads grazed the topmost layer of frosty powder - in no time at all did the warrior hear the squeak of terror, his dark ears flicking at the rustle of fur scampering up the nearest tree. Nightowl pinned his blue eyes on the bushy tail, watching the critter's escape from the ground and up to one of the branches of the oak. If a squirrel can disappear there, that means-

"And just what do you think you are doing?"

The dark warrior's head moved only an inch towards the source of the voice, his eyes rolled to its corners to catch sight of the voice's owner. He took a quick observation of the dark mask and paws upon the white pelt, contrasting with the blue eyes that blazed fury. Nightowl assumed the escaped squirrel had been her prey, and he caused the loss simply by walking. You will get it. He flicked his gaze back towards the tree, ears flicking to acknowledge the Siamese she-cat, his tail lifted to an almost straightened position. One less mouth fed because of him? He could make up for it right now if Snowblaze wanted.

Quietly moving past without giving one verbal response to her, Nightowl circled to the other side of the tree, keeping his pawsteps light and his eyes fixed on the branch he'd last seen the squirrel. One mottled paw with its claws unsheathed was placed against the trunk; it was cold and covered in sprinkles of ice and snow, but the chinks in the bark were still there. The tree could be safely climbed, if he was careful enough. After what seemed like ages, he turned his head to the white warrior, his strange blue eyes blinking. I don't suppose you climb?

Nightowl launched himself into the tree, his foreclaws gripping the wood hard as he brought his hindlegs in to find some footing. "There will be enough," he mewed quietly, stretching his body out for his forelegs to grip a higher section of the tree, before bringing in his hindclaws again to steady himself. The Bengal repeated this process, with tail held out for balance as he slithered up the tower of wood almost like the squirrel earlier.
