My little sister was recently reading The Great Gatsby in school. She's in the 11th grade, and I know a lot of you are probably about 15-17, so you've either read it, or are going to read it. If you don't want to spoil the ending, I wouldn't join. xD
In The Great Gatsby, a young man named Nick Carraway, a WWI veteran, moves to Long Island. His cousin, Daisy, lives there with her husband, Tom. Tom isn't the loveliest of men; he's a cheating liar. He has a mistress in the city named Myrtle, the wife of a man he gives his business to, George. Meanwhile, a popular man has emerged in the area; Jay Gatsby. He throws great parties, but for a reason.
When Daisy was a young girl, about 17, she lived on an army base. This is where she first met Jay Gatsby. They fell in love, but before long, Jay was sent to war, and they drifted away. He sent her a letter, the night of her wedding, saying he was going to return. She suffered a minor mental breakdown, for she really did love Gatsby, but was convinced to go through with the wedding anyhow.
Years later, Jay moved to Long Island, throwing illustrious parties in hopes of attracting and impressing Daisy. He finds out his neighbor is Daisy's cousin Nick, and befriends him, suggesting she come over for tea. They are reunited, and their romance rekindles.
After several weeks of this, Jay wants Daisy to leave Tom, and insist she never loved him. On a day they spend in town, she reluctantly tells him something of the sort, and a fight breaks out. She and Jay leave in a fury, and on the way they pass by the home of Myrtle and George. Myrtle recognizes the yellow car they were driving as the one Tom had been in earlier, and she runs out to it. She's rather distraught, because George has found out she has been unfaithful. He's kept her locked in her room. In her blind hysteria, she runs in front of the car, and gets killed.
Daisy doesn't stop the car, and keeps on home, panicked. Tom, Nick, and Jordan (Daisy's friend, Nick's love interest) come by a little later, only to see the confusion surrounding the accident place. To get revenge on Jay, Tom tells George that the person driving the yellow car must not only be her killer, but her lover as well.
In madness, George hunts down the car. When he finally finds the yellow car, he searches it's owners house, only to find it is Gatsby's car. He shoots and kills Gatsby, before taking his own life.
Daisy and Tom pack up and move away before anyone knows any better, pretending never of it happened. Nick grieves the loss of his friend.
Now, for a little more of a back story on the characters:
Daisy comes from a rich, old family. She is very careless.
Tom also comes from a rich, old family. I gave a little information about him above.
Nick comes from middle class, joins the army, and then moves to long island to become a bondsman. He is extremely non-judgmental at the beginning of the novel, but as events unfold, he can't help but discriminate.
Jordan is a rich girl, who plays golf. She is a compulsive liar, and also very careless.
Jay come from a humble not-so-well-off family. He strived to be so much better, so he worked hard to attain money. He gets it from bootlegging (as alcohol was illegal in the 1920s.) His original name was James Gatz. He created a whole other persona for himself, to distance himself from his beginning.
And so...
If there's any hole in the description, let me know. Unfortunately, there's some unfaithfulness in this plot. I need to ask an admin about it. If it's not okay, then I guess I typed all this for nothing xD If it is, I'll post again with positions and what needs to be taken.
