Since the official Warriors series is related to the site, I hope this question is supposed to be in this board. If not, please move it or tell me.

Okay, I was thinking hard about this one, but it still eludes me. If the cats in Erin Hunter's Warriors cannot understand Twolegs, and they cannot read anything, much less their own collars, how does Rusty know what his name is, and he can understand his Twolegs calling him? Thanks!

I'm not an expert on pets, but I'll try to explain it in the way I've understood it.

Well, it is like when you first get a pet. You name it, and then you gradually teach it to come when it is called or use the name often enough so that the pet knows that you are talking to it, referring to it or calling it. Pets actually can understand certain words when they are around humans, just like you can teach a dog that, "No" means to stop doing something, and "sit" means to sit. Now, you could probably use a word that doesn't mean sit and still teach it to sit, because the pet will only use the association of the word with an action or emotion. They don't really know the meaning of the word. For instance, a cat or dog might notice that whenever you commonly use the word "STOP", your tone is angry and you might look or act a certain way. They will associate that word and tone with your anger. Sometimes they don't understand why though, which is why a lot of animals such as dogs have to be trained a certain way in order to respond to commands correctly.

I hope that makes a bit more sense. Pets like cats may not be able to understand full human speech, but they can pick up on how certain tones are used and how you react when you are using a word or command. Regular conversations though, I would assume would be impossible for them to understand, and they might just note your tone or emotions instead of actually understanding your speech.

I would assume that Rusty's owners, like most owners, taught him to recognize his name when he was called. He won't know what Rust means, but he will know that they are referring to him when they call him "Rusty", and he might be able to pick up that they use a different tone when they call him. Kind of like when owners speak to their pets in baby-voices and make their tones all more high-pitched than usual. XD
